Does your town or city have these? They're about to install these in our town and the residents think it's an invasion of privacy.

There are some towns around here that DO have them, but i've never gotten a ticket by one.

Stop for ALL redlights and you will have no problems. My hometown only has 2 stoplights and I stop when they are red so bring on them cameras. 0 -

WHAT THEN? Yes they do have them where I live and have been the topic of debate and litigation for several years. They do record some GREAT accidents though.[;)]0 -

"supposedly" a guy did that, and the cops took it in jest, and sent him a picture of a pair of handcuffs
there are more than 1 kind of camera, some just monitor and record in case of accidents, the ones that take picture of people running red lights are not as common0 -

These have had a negitive effect in my area. It used to be that people wouldn't run red lights because there might be a police car near by. Now the police do not watch the red lights, cameras do. So on the intersections that do not have cameras everybody runs the red. Why not, the police are not watching you and there was no camera. 0 -

Our town has a couple at high traffic intersections. It is my understanding that they were installed by a third party contractor who gets a majority of the proceeds. I am also told that accidents at these intersections have been reduced by over 50%.

Cameras have been known to malfunction and take pictures if you stop just a "bit" beyond the stop sign / light / signal.
You'll still be required to pay the fine, and you have no recourse to dispute what the camera took a picture of.0 -
have not got any ticket from this but was told this little beach town does this but if you chose not to pay the ticket the town ate it, something about( fl law ) you couldnt tell who was driving the car to tell who gets the points on the license. guess the bottom line is if you dont pay the ticket and if you get pulled over later and they have a bench warrent out for you on tickets not paid then this hear say was bull s**t [8D] if you get pulled over and r let go it was true,[:D] KEEP US POSTED IF YOU DONT PAY THE TICKET AND WHAT HAPPENS LATER [:D] 0 -
The DC Metro area has stop light cameras and speed cameras all over the place.
Personally, I think they are a crock. I don't like people that pass red lights, I never do, but I am against anything like this since it only leads to more controls. There is no moderation when it comes to controls like this, it is all or none. What is next? If you don't make a full stop before a right-on-red, you'll also get an automated ticket? (they have talked about that around here)
Virginia has a whole slew of new fines for the stated purpose of generating revenue for roads. $3000 for 25 over the limit. Plus all kinds of other "cruel and unusual fines" for other minor infractions.
This is a police state and is NOT a good thing for anyone.
Here is how it works:
1. If you get caught, you will pay a fine but no points - typically $75.
2. They also record your speed, so if you stop ahead of the line, you will NOT get a ticket.
3. They are for revenue, not safety, we have one where people go through, but rarely dangerous since the side-street is less traveled, and 2 blocks further, a busy school. The school light does not have one, since less people pass it (but many do).
3a A private company is in charge of the cameras, they do everything and send revenue - less their cut - to the city.
4. None of the after market stuff does anything. Mythbusters tried them all.0 -

I live in a very congested area. When we had the cameras, most of the people stopped for the lights. Now that the state has taken them away, people run lights like crazy. Keep in mind that the camera doesn't take the picture if you're already in the intersection when the light changes, and--around here--the camera didn't take the picture if you were 1/2 second into the red when you entered the intersection. Accordingly, you only got a ticket when you were well and truly running a red light.
When our area had them red light running and the related accidents went way down. Now that they're gone, both of these have gone right back up. In fact, I sit at a green for a couple seconds before going because it's so bad.

Albuquerque has had them for almost a year now, and since the "safety" issue was why they were installed in the first place, let me tell you how "safe" they really are: Rear-end accidents are up 450%, revenues are up 1800%, road rage around the intersections is up 350%, and the Mayor is running for Senate!
There's no face picture taken, the thing trips whenever your car passes a buried sensor and the light is changing. Not just changing to red!
Tickets are a "civil penalty" with no points on your license, but the city can take your vehicle if you don't pay.
There's also NO RECOURSE at all. You may set an appointment to "protest" your $250 fine, but that only gets you into a room with a city administrator who wants your money, not your explanation.
So far, over $736,000,000 has been stolen from citizens through this scheme, accidents are up, revenues are up, the cameras have had to be replaced at several intersections due to "vandalism", and I feel as though this is a useful indoctrination into a Socialistic police state, where you are guilty as charged, no matter the circumstances, and equally guilty as your neighbors no matter what.0 -

There is absolutely no excuse for blasting through stop signs/lights. Since you are

My town (Houston) has almost as many cameras as London.
I know Oakland, CA has 80+ microphones installed in their city, in conjunction with the cams.0 -
This is nothing but a revenue generating device. There is a lot of talk in So. FL about implementing these cameras. If caught running a red, you get a fine but no points on your license.
I'm thinking of building one of those rotating tag devices...like Bond, James Bond had in his Austin Martin. I'll set it to the accelerator so when you gun it, your tag rotates.
I'll use an exact replica of the Mayor's tag.[:D]0 -
The 2 biggest problems I have with this is one it is for the MONEY and nothing less. I don't/or try not to (it happens) run red lights and don't think anyone else should.
The other reason is that what it leads to. What's next cameras on the sidewalk to bust you if you spit on the sidewalk? Cameras to make sure you don't J-Walk? Cameras everywhere to make sure you don't break anyone of the insane amount of laws we have and the more that are coming?
How do these cams work for emergency vehicles? I run many many red lights every week doing this.0 -

Who is foolish enough to have any idea they have "privacy" when they are moving around out in public, on public roads and public places, driving a car with their license plate, which traces back to them, required by law to be clearly visible.
Usually such complainers are the ones who know they risk the lives of others by frequently running stop lights. Their time is more value than the time of the careful drivers who stop for those lights. The complainers about "privacy" are using about the only half-way reasonalbe argument to argue against the camera. They have no choice but to raise the issue of "privacy." What else could they raise? That they have a "right" to run a red light if no cop is around?
If I purposely run a stop light and thereby risk the life of you and/or your family, I deserve a traffic ticket. Matters not to me whether that ticket is served per a camera or a cop. Actually the camera is better since that is iron clad proof I ran the light. Or at least someone whom I gave permission to use my car ran the light. So send me the ticket (it is not considered a moving violation against your driver's license in most places) and I will make the idiot who was driving my car pay the ticket.
Problem solved. Anybody who disagrees just wants to keep on running lights and getting away with it. If you really must keep your "privacy" in public, wear a disguise.0 -
