Can anyone give me some training ideas for shooting IDPA matches?

Practice with a gun and bullets.
Take safety off before pulling trigger.

    I understand that![:D][:D]

I just don't know what an IDPA match involves other than it is with pistols and you shoot between 3 and 20 yards!

Go on line and down load the rules. Some of the reloading requirements are a little odd. I see more penalties from people that don't know and follow the rules. When you shoot your first matches, don't get in a rush. Try to go thru without making mistakes worry about speed as you become more familiar. If it is an official match, you may have to shoot the standard qualifiers. Read about them and practice them. Make sure you have a legal holster and mag pouches. The rules will tell you what division you will be shooting in.

    Think.......cover.

Most IDPA stages are set up, so that you shoot using any available cover. Unlike IPSC which is a more run and gun out in the open. If the RO/SO yells "cover" get back behind it.

Like Pearyw said. Pay attention to the rules. Read them before you go. The better you understand them, the more fun you will have.

The penalty for dropping a mag with ammo left in it, used to get me. I was used to changing mags EVERY time I changed positions, when shooting other disciplines. Can't do that in IDPA. [;)]

You won't win the first time out, so DO take your time, and learn. Accuracy first, speed will follow, in time.

I know I won't win first time out. It will probly take me quite awhile to get to a level of even thinking of winning.

I did send a message off to Ivan at RIA/Armscor to see if they would sponcer me with one of thier shirts since I will be competeing with thier guns![:D]

What the hell, it don't hurt to ask![:D][:D][:D][:D]

    learn the rule book

first you need to learn how to properly "load and make ready", then how to properly "unload and show clear", sounds trivial but i see many newbs who hold up a stage with these simple steps, think safety over all, i see a lot of them flagging their muzzle, i know it may not sound like something you would do but when that buzzer goes off you will be full of adrenaline, as if you just bungee jumped for the first time

you will be competing in cdp class, you will start with 9 rounds, then have to 8 rounders if possible, learn how to reload in accordance to the rules, you have three, slide lock, reload with retention, and tactical reload, learn how to score, so's make mistakes, and above all please help paste your targets

if you need more help let me know we can arrange a phone call, i can go on, and on with typing and my head is pounding right now, btw i am ranked master in i.d.p.a., i would be more than willing to help you get started

btw targets can be from 0 yards to 35 yards, head shot only 10, weak hand only 7

Well the way I did it was to go and see what it was all about. Make sure you use a gun your very familar with. Depending on what kind of gun you are shooting you will need between 3-6 mags with pouches as some stages can take 40-50 rounds. Most stages are somewhere between 20-35. Obviously eye and ear protection. The bigest thing is to have an open mind. When you get there find the RO (range officer) and get the saftey rules. The place I shoot eveyone is very friendly and willing to help with any questions you may have.

There are stages set up and there are rules for each stage. When you get to that stage the group will go over the stage and then shooting will start. Watch what the people in front of you do and try to learn, there is too much to learn in one day. The shoots are very fun and friendly where I am at, sadly I am only able to make it to a few a year.

I am by no means fast or good but I am only competing aginst myself at this point. I could care less what my score is but it is nice when I am not last. I usually come in somewhere about 2/3 and 3/4 mark.

Here is a couple videos of me at one last year. I was shooting with my G17 at the time and I am currently using a G35 and have done much better.

Here is the shotgun side match. I did really good at this one. I was 3rd and the guy that beat me is the one running the timer, his time was 0.5 seconds faster then me. The guy that beat us was by 10 sec [:0]. I am shooting a Benelli M1 Super 90.

Do not try for speed when you first start out, take it slow and the speed will come, always remember:
Slow is Smooth: Smooth is Fast

    head feels much better now

when they say "cover" it means 2 things, 1 you must wear a cover garment, vest, shirt, jacket, wear something comfortable that you cannot see the gun whatsoever when your arms are held strait out, i prefer a vest with my keys in the pocket so i can throw it out the way
2 when shooting from cover your feet and legs cannot be exposed, only 50% of your upper body can be exposed, you are actually shooting from a slight angle to do this correctly, practice it before you go from the left and right, you will find your proper foot placement, and it will become natural and easy

    your holster and mag carrier is up to you, if you choose to shoot with your everyday carry holster, learn where placement is allowed, mag carrier what ever you choose don't use one with snaps, it will guarantee you last place,{you will want kydex eventually}

as i mentioned there is 3 reloads
1 slide lock, pretty self explanatory, except that before you leave cover if applicable your slide must be forward, oe a pe will be given
2 tactical reload, this mostly applied when you reload before you leave cover, you grab a mag in your weak hand, drop the loaded mag into the same hand, insert the fresh mag and run, again you cannot leave cover until it is fully seated, stow the other mag on the way
3reload w retention, drop the used mag into your weak hand, i use my front pant pocket while in one motion on the way back up grab the fresh mag, seat it and go
the beach about the last two is even if the magazine is empty as long as there is a round in the chamber it still must be retained

tactical order, targets closest to you will be your starting point,{near to far}, typically every body gets two

tactical sequence, every body gets 1 first, then 1 again, three targets would be like this 1,1,2,1,1

slicing the pie, this can be tricky at first because you would think {near to far}, but when slicing the pie you engage the first target you see from around the point of cover regardless of their distance

Mozambique, 2 to the body one to the head

those are some of the basics to get you started, and so you may feel a bit comfortable, my first time i tried just not to shoot my foot or the so, second time it has been GAME ON every since, and remember it is just a game

we will expect a full report on how you liked it, and i will warn you it has a special addiction, once your bit, well like i said above i will be more than willing to help you kevin, email me if want to talk further on a land line
