Nearly seven months after Miami-Dade police say he accidentally blew up his house while growing marijuana inside, Edel Mesa has been arrested.
Mesa, 40, still recovering in a jail hospital ward, was charged with arson, attempted trafficking in marijuana, possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia, police said Thursday.
On April 7, firefighters were called to an explosion at a house at 10130 SW 34th St.
Officers found 41 live marijuana plants inside, along with high-intensity lights, fertilizer and an indoor irrigation system.
According to an arrest form released Thursday, Mesa had used a 100-pound propane tank to power a carbon-dioxide generator to ``accelerate the growth of the marijuana plants.''
But the line was not connected properly and propane gas seeped into a room inside the house. The explosion collapsed the house, injuring Mesa's wife and severly burning him.
Investigators found his shoes and a butane lighter under the generator. The damage to the house was estimated at $200,000.
Mesa was charged with arson because the explosion happened during the commission of a felony, in this case operating a grow-house, police said.
