Lead shot in duck ponds

Many years ago we duck hunters shot a bunch of lead shot over the water. What has happened to it? Does it sink in time down into the mud? I wonder if it was really the threat that lead shot opponents said. What say you..... [?]

    If the pond is soft bottom, gravity takes it down to the nether reaches.

    I found that in my pond, when there is a full moon late in the night, my lead shot is drawn silently and inexorably out of the water and into the sky...perhaps ending up on the Luna ???

    Google for the lead study that was done by Virginia Tech a few years ago.

    They looked at BLM shooting ranges and at Civil War battle grounds to see if the lead was contaminating the water. In short, turns out that lead does not "leach" into water or soil and fears of shooting causing lead poisoning are overblown.

    The main issue with lead shot is that animals will eat it, but then they will just die from lead poisoning pretty fast. If you are shooting over water, this will mean a few dead fish and waterfowl, as it will sink pretty quick.

    Once in the mud on the bottom, it will not disintegrate and poison the water. Your frog friends will be find.

    Funny how we are allowed to hunt mourning doves over water bodies with lead #6, #7 1/2 or 8s, but are not allowed to hunt ducks on the same pond with lead during duck season....bureaucratic stupidity.

    BTW, lead sinks into the mud and could potentially be ingested by diving ducks....but that is a long shot as gravity takes over as Plautus said.

    Much like all the other "environmental" crap we panic over every day, exaggeration is much too weak a word. If it were half as dangerous as the tree huggers would have us believe, ducks would have been extinct years ago. Not to mention the rest of us.

    I think more ducks fly away and die due to pizz poor shooters, than will ever die from eating lead shot.

    I have lost more ducks using steel shot than I ever did with lead. But, the thought that the ducks that I shot with steel that flew away, died, and were eaten by a critter, that those critters did not get lead poisining. For that I can sleep at night.
