I got a NEW COMPUTER today! How long it lasts...?
It is a Dell Dimension E521...
My brother (who works in computers) ran into some kind of "killer deal" where for $700 you got some type of machine that has a list of jiblets and thing-a-ma-bobs that I know nothing about. It has some kind of different opperating system....new kind of Windows...the monitor is flat and the speakers sound AWESOME (there is some box thing under the desk.)
One problem.....where's my floppy? I just called and asked...he was nice about it but I can tell he wishes I would learn to use more "modern" things....like the digital camera with the USB cable. He just doesn't understand. My brain hurts just thinking about trying new things.

My brother in law is all computer smart. I can't stand to get all technical with them either. 0 -
I've got a new 521, it didn't come with a floppy either. Picked one up on Ebay for $22.00 shipped -- just plug it in when you need it --USB. (Your brother will know about it). 0 -
Wheres the picture?[:o)] 0 -
I really do need to try out more things...my cell phone I just got has a REALLY nice camera. I had hoped to be able to upload pics from the store using my laptop and my phone. Who knows what will be out there by the time I do get these types of things down. 0 -
My new one came with no floppy also. Had the stor install one before I took delivery. Needed it so I could use my Sony digital camera.

if its leading the pack this year, it will be in the middle of the pack in about 18months. 2-2.5yrs from now it will struggle to keep up. but its all relative to what you need it for. somebody that does nothing more than read e-mail can still get by with a computer bought years and yearss ago.
the 3.5in floppy disk is well on its way to being completely and irrevocably retired. its well past obsolete.0 -
Havent had a floppy drive in a computer on purpose since 2000.... of course, the last time I had to put one in (getting old test scores out of a old system for a grade challenge) I needed to get a working 5 1/4 *floppy* floppy drive... the kind you can use a hole punch on the other side to double the capacity... 0 -
Floppy drives went out with the Model A!!![:D] 0 -
You'll need more than a floppy drive to install a floppy drive in your new Dell. If you want one, get one from Dell that includes the mounting parts. If you get one off ebay - or compusa - you'll just be connecting it and either setting it on top of your computer or having it loose in the mounting slot. 0 -
The Dell E521 has a drive bay available for an optional floppy drive. I would not purchase one from Dell----no reason too---they don't manufacture the components and all you're doing is paying "a middle man". Floppy drives are all pretty much standard. Best places are here (online):
Newegg
TigerDirect
Good prices and fast shipping.0 -

you have more than enough space for a floppy, they are pushing the no floppy thing because they have more control over what you do with a bootable cd, and it keeps you out of dos, {NOT MS DOS YOU CAN GET TO CURRENTLY} but sub dos, the important one0
