im from Michigan and that was all over the news. I dont agree with it, but he did it when he was 11. I am not saying thats an EXCUSE, but there is something to think about there 0 -

I am in that courthouse just about every other day. I know the attorneys on the case. This was a huge deal all around, and frankly, it doesn't say much for the prosecution.
The kid was 11. Yes, he probably knew it was wrong, but he was f---ing 11 at the time!
Now, the prosecutor gets on teh news & says "He'll be back." If that's her attitude, then why not get rid of the whole juvenile justice system? If our own prosecutor doesn't have faith in it, then what business does he have putting people into it?
Teh prosecutor wanted to put this kid away for LIFE.
Now, the big news seems to be the way he was dressed, and that he didn't show "remorse". The kid can't win. What do you expect? He's getting out of the system after 10 years. I once made the mistake of telling a client to dress like he's going to church. He showed up to court wearing a lime green suit, tie, shoes and hat, with a black shirt. What are you going to do? I've had other clients show up looking like they pulled their clothing out of a barn.
He's said he's sorry a million times. Noone will ever accept it or believe it. It's retarded to even comment on it.
So, the state is paying for school and housing. Big deal. It pays for all kinds of loosers. He did his time. It's a tragedy all around...0 -

My older daughter took five years to get through the U of M, and I had to pay non-resident tuition for all five. When my younger daughter had to pay non-resident tuition at Berkely--while I was teaching in the UC system for chrissakes!--the girls' schooling took almost every penny I had saved from an 11-year stint in Saudi Arabia. I'm not quite sure how I feel about ex-felons getting a free ride. 0 -

They pulled the money for his free ride from another county's program, a program that is intended for kids who are wards of the state, who have not yet commited murder. It truly sad you believe in rewarding actions like his.
What kind of signal is this sending to children? do you remember a little organization called "young boys inc."?
Guess what, the state just turned into the best recruiting tool gangs like that ever had.

It does seem (highly accented) that he is, at least to some degree, desirous of a normal crime-free life.
But even if that's true, all the State is doing by giving him this Free Ride is proving to him that good things come to those who refuse to work for them.
I swear, one day people will look back and curse the names of the Liberal snake-oil salesmen who convinced America that training an entire class of people to take free handouts with no need for any personal responsibility was the normal, natural thing to do. They claim to be trying to undo years of damage caused by you and I, but in reality all they are doing is destroying whatever self-respect, dignity, and personal honor they have left, to the detriment of everybody.
In the city of Detroit at any given moment there's probably 20 fast food joints hiring. There's whole civic agencies who's sole purpose is to take ghetto dwellers who walk in off the street, and find them a paying job ON THE SPOT.
But despite what Jesse Jackson or Al Sharpton or any one of a dozen garbage-talkers (black and white) will tell you, people in the ghetto don't sell drugs, knock over liquor stores, and stick people up for their wallets because they "have no other options".
They do it for the same reason all criminals do. It's easier than doing the right thing. But where white criminals have no one to make excuses for them, urban criminals have whole legions of people waiting around for the chance to point an angry finger at the mean ol' white man on Rashante's behalf. So Rashante never associates his misdeeds with his punishment. It's always the white man's fault. So he has no problem doing it again, and again, and again. And every time he gets punished, it's another travesty, with more people to come out of the woodwork and curse the Justice System for it's racism. And he never understands, or cares to.
The minority community as a whole has become so hopelessly mired in the notion of supreme entitlement that they'll live their whole lives doing whatever they please, because no matter what the white man shells out, they deserve more.
Recently there's been a resurgence in interest in the Al Pacino movie "Scarface" in the black ghetto community. I can't walk around the mall without seeing 50 black teenagers with their Tony Montana shirts on. Sick thing is, it's popular with them solely because of the message of the movie: "The World Is Yours". As the lead guy says, "I want what's coming to me. The world, and everything in it."
There's no honor in him. No "misguided soul". He just decided that the whole world owes him, and he's going to take it at gunpoint. The fact that this message resonates so strongly with the black community speaks volumes.0 -
Bullzeye- the problem is that in the city of detroit, the people are not CAPABLE of even working in a fast food joint. Detroit is literally "deflating" - people are leaving in droves.
Now, you put a kid in the juvenile system at age 11, and keep him there for 10 years. Now, there's the old saying "you break it, you bought it". What the prosecutor is saying (and those who think that he should be put away forever) is that the juvenile justice system doesn't work. If that's the case, why even have it?
You all seem quick to think that he's going to F up. He may. It's very easy to be a pessamist-you are always right, or you are pleasantly suprised.
The issue is not "entitlement". The fact is that we have a juvenile justice system, and that we treat kids differently than adults.
As far as "entitlement" goes, that's a different issue. It's not entitlement - it's what I call "blood money". If you are familiar with Detroit, there is a street that literally is the border between Grosse Pointe and Detroit. It's like in the old cartoons where one character woudl cross from the land of black and white into technicolor. And do you know WHY such a street can exist? Because we give just enough to the neer do wells that they don't bother crossing that line.
Bullzeye & DonG, I think you give too much credit by assuming that this guy is going to take some lesson away from this, i.e., kill a guy=get an education. I do remember young boys inc.- and I'll tell you this: if we can pay for an education versus paying for incarceration, education is a better deal any day of the week.0 -

It turns out that the Oakland County Prosecutor was WRONG and was "mininformed" about this program. NONE OF IT IS TRUE. If you deal with the OCPA, this is par for the Course. Here's the link:
