Kevlar was actually a joint invention of two chemists at DuPont in the mid-60's, one male and one female, and was originally used for belts in vehicle tires. Using this stuff to build lightweight hard armor was studied, but it was thought this material was unsuitable for soft body armor due to blunt trauma.
Richard Davis had the idea of using this stuff for concealable body armor in the early 70's. He obtained material from DuPont, made up his own panels and shot himself to prove his idea. He then founded Second Chance and marketed the first Kevlar body armor.
The US military didn't adopt Kevlar body armor (PASGT) for another 10 years.0 -
