File and data transfer to new laptop?

Well my laptop is committing ritual suicide after three years and I am purchasing another.

My question is, has anyone here used a commercial transfer program other than "Transfer wizard"?
I am looking for software that will transfer everything including programs (wizard will not transfer programs, just settings).

The one I am looking at is "CA DESKTOP DNA MIGRATOR" which includes a date transfer cable.

Have any of you used it or anything similar?

    Problem with transferring programs is that Windows apps scatter stuff all over. You'll have stuff in c:\program files, the registry, c:\windows, c:\windows\system, c:\windows\system32, etc.

    Reinstall your apps. Settings, etc. can be moved over, but you need to look at *hidden and system files* to do it, and then look under C:\documents and settings\yourusername\application data

    Interesting, so is it even worth the cost of buying a program other than "Wizard"?

    I should also add that I will be going from XP Pro to Vista premium.

    I love my new Dell with Windows Vista, its great once you give it a chance. I didnt think at first I would like it.

    Don't transfer programs over.

    Use the network port to transfer data over the network cable and reinstall all of your applications. transferring applications is asking for trouble, especially between versions!

    file transfer can be done easy and safely, and if you have a router/hub or modem with more than 1 port set up for a home network it is as simple as transferring on one pc file to file

    now program transfer is a totally different beast, this is why one of the first things i do to a new comp is make a separate program file that i have to use deliberately to install from, now a software guided install you may not get to work because it chooses its own path, and in this it can break itself up over several locations, and you will get the old "path not found error"

    when you cross that road post it,do you know what your getting?

    i love vista, and i would suggest something with a "core2duo", and remember it is not the same as a dual core, it is the best on the market, i will never buy anything else again
