Some police officers don't believe in self-defense for non-cops. That sort of officer will always consider himself "special" even after leaving the job. He likely sees no conflict in his actions as a lawmaker and as a property owner. He will still think you and I should not shoot crooks but he can.

He took someone's life over copper wire?

So, a knife was thrown at him. So what? He is against ordinary citizens using deadly force to protect their lives. He should live by his rules and he should not have shot the copper thief.

    Doesn't matter. Not one iota.

Plus, he's an idiot on top of being a hypocrite. If you shoot and you're not a LEO, you shoot to kill, not to wound.

LEO, CCW, no matter who you are, if you find yourself in a deadly force encounter, you do not shoot to wound, nor do you shoot to kill. You shoot to stop the threat. Once the threat is neutralized, usually because the bad guy is dead or has run away, you stop shooting.

David, I guess that depends on how you interpret the situation. You're a trained LEO, I'm not. If the day ever comes when I'm put in the situation, I'm telling you that I will shoot to kill (or at least I plan on it). Wounded, armed criminals certainly will have that desire. If I'm in a gunfight, someone is dying, and I don't want it to be me.

Of course, I would never shoot someone in the back, if they leave, the threat has ended, and they walk away.

+1, but replace "irony" with "hypocrit."

Read a little more carefully. He shot the guy in the leg, and the guy is now recovering at a local hospital before being charged.

    The other guy got away.

    Thanks Zulu.

Now, if anyone else would like to point out that mistake yet again, please, by all means, have at it. [;)]

Hell, I made the same mistake reading the post, just didn't post a reply. GA now has the Castle doctrine and in the given circumstance it would be legal to shoot the guy.

Given that I can't imagine shooting an unarmed man (he threw his knife away) over a roll of copper wire, even in the leg. A local guy was shot in the leg with a 22 mag and he was DOA, as the round hit an artery.

Go figure. I can defend myself but I don't want you to be able to defend yourself. That's just the kinda thing that gets good folks killed. Ex cops should be treated the same as anyone else ! IMHO

Shooting someone is using deadly force no matter what the outcome.
