The difference is, back in the old west the local "doctor" didn't spend 8+ years in post-secondary education, and learn how to perform heart transplants and the like. Doctors of today are much more highly trained and therefore command a higher wage.

Correct. Today that same doctor probably has $100K in outstanding student loans (and a hefty malpractice premium) so a buck, along with a plate of chicken, ain't going to cover them.

I understand that they spend several years in school to learn their trade, but then what about the nurses, or the sect's or the housekeeping staff, All of these are important as I don't think a heart doctor would clean up the OR after the operation.
I also understand that everybody needs money to live, but not everyone has the same chances in life.
It takes a village to raise a child as it takes a country to see to it their people have affordable heath care.
I have known doctors who felt it was a burden to try & explain what was wrong with someone, but let that same Doctor have a flat & your his best friend if you offer to change it for him.
    Money IS NOT everything.

An I stand by my statement that life is more important than money.

FYI This is not the case everywhere. My brother is going to the U of M to be a Dr. he gets health coverage through the school. It's cheep like $300 a semister and better coverage than I get at $1100 a month.

+1 also if the hospitals would set up group health plans that everyone could pay into based on your income i believe there would be excess enough to take care of the less fortunate . but here again we have let insurance companys become big business by supplying these high cost plans so they can play middle man and sit on their butts and tell a doctor what they will pay. if we get rid of them and turn health care over to the doctors the red tape would be gone thus excess money generated to help the cost of the less fortunate folks[:0]

Unforturnately, Kristov is not wrong. Except that 100K is probably not enough for the balance of the student loan. Plus, the Dr. chose that profession largely based upon his expectation of it producing "high income." While exceptions exist, docs, as a group, are some of the poorest businessmen. They are a "fish" for anyone with a deal to sell them. I see it too often in my profession. Many make a lot, but they spend it.

The other issue that exists is the health care provided to the those who cannot pay. Even though not all services are made available to them, most basic services are available. Who pays for it? You & me. Today a visit to the emergency room will likely cost $1500-$2000. Many cannot pay. The hospital & Dr. spread those over the ones that can & do. In many rural areas, there are so many of those who cannot that local hospitals have a difficult time staying in business.

Lorne - I do not know your profession or occupation. However, if you have not spent a lot of time in analysis of the books of the hospital or the Dr, you may not fully understand all of the issues. I am afraid that the answer is not as simple as we like for it to be. I can tell you that the cost of operating a hospital is unbelieveable. In addition, I, along with you, expect them to have the very lastest in equipment for diagnosis and treatment for me. The cost of this is huge.

In addition in defense of Drs, most are up early to make rounds at the hospital (making decisions that hopefully keep us alive), go to the office & see patients all day, and then go back to the hospital & make rounds and often get home about 8 or 9, assuming that no emergency arose. They are also on call for emergencies most of the time. Their job is not one that I would choose. They earn their pay. BTW -- not all make that much. One, whose facts I know, makes less than 100,000 per year and he has been in practice for many years and has a big patient base. Unfortunately for him, many are low income people and he often does not get paid.

In addition --- I know one who is an attractive lady that would be welcomed to pose for playboy any day. Only wish I knew her better. LOL

im not against doctors at all but i know that insurance companys also have a payroll to shuffle papers all the while discounting the bill of the doctor. he in turn has to raise his prices so he can make sure by the time they do this he can be paid. if as a group say all construction people firemen police nurses etc etc . could pool their health deductions to said hospitals. not everyone would b sick at once. and the doctor would bill the hospital for his service not a insurance co.[?]

Agreed. The insurance companies create "overhead" that must be paid by someone. You know who. Today, you do not want to "be sick" without it though.

Yep, agree. One should not have to place a value on their life (health) because of money or the lack thereof.

Unless something changes, In the next 25-30 years the common working class dog will not be able to afford health care or an automobile.

I might be wrong, I've never had to find out, but I don't believe any doctor who has taken the Hippocratic Oath would allow anyone to die because they were broke. I certainly hope I'm right...

Just as I hope No one in public office that took an oath would cheat.

Payment of health care costs is a multi-faceted problem:

    1) Cost of education

    2) Cost of technically based equipment

    3) Office space overhead, including assisting personnel

    4) Cost of insurance.

I believe that the primary problem is attorneys who are willing to sue a doctor or hospital at the drop of a hat.

As a matter of fact, I think the largest problems our Country is experiencing can be traced directly to attorneys.

If there is anything at all that I can do to help this young women, let me know, and I will do my level best to assist her.

Many people die from treatable illnesses, because they are afraid of the COST, of going to the Dr.

I disagee with dano. Money is the medium of exchange. It is people that makes the world go round. Our attitudes and feelings go past our greed, at least some of the time. I do agree that greed is a basic personality trait of humans. Remove the opportunity to create wealth (greed) and the society will fail. Socialism does not work, regardless of its humanitarian appeal.

Two words....MALPRACTICE INSURANCE!! Do you have any idea the premiums doctors have to pay for that stuff? Un-freaking-believable! But then there are the lowered costs that insurance companies demand from doctors. Now there are insurance companies rating doctors on the "cheapness" of the care they provide for their patients!

Yup, on the malpractice insurance. However, ever been on a jury or seen a jury trial where a Dr is the defendant. He had better pull down his britches. They are fixin to "stick it to him." Had an PI attorney tell me one time - "give me a jury where no one finished more than the 8th grade & I can win anything." We, the people, do it to ourselves!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Read up on Texas and medical malpractice suit reform. Read about how the insurance companies and "well meaning" folks like yourselves sold a medical malpractice reform package to the Texas voters based on "frivolous lawsuits and the cost of malpractice insurance." Lawyers were killing the medical profession the voters are told.

Well, two years later, it is all but impossible to sue for medical malpractice in Texas. I have seen two children killed since the reform bill by incompetent doctors whose parents were "frozen" from suing. And guess what? Medical malpractice insurance for doctors has increased since the voters of Texas bit the hook you are sinking.

You are most uninformed if you believe your anti-lawyer spew. Spend time in a lawyer's office and see what we do. We are the last line of defense for the common man against government and corporations run wild.

Again, read up on Texas and see how your "philosophy" holds in the real world.

Besides, we all know it's the PLUMBERS that are the root of our county's problems.
