gun dog
Been looking into getting some dogs, finally that I am in a setting to do so, here's my first choice for rifle dog:
along with a guard dog for the house:
any thoughts?

First one is a killer. The second one is just a lap dog. 0 -
Cocker Spaniels are sweet dogs....unless they don't feeeeeel like being sweet. Then they are furrryocious! 0 -

actually exactly the opposite, standard poodles are by far one of the smartest breeds. mine just died, he was probably the smartest dog i've known, lived long too and was pretty tough.0 -

Funny thing, my friend just got an adult doberman bitch, one can say she's a ice cream -- scared of everything and everyone but when she barks nobody really knows whether she barks because she's scared or for some other reason -- still a mean looking dog. I doubt someone would try to risk breaking into a house with a dobe or two0 -
my last doberman lived to be 17 and goin strong till the end.
both the dobies and sheps for some reason (bad owners?) get a bad rap with kids. all mine, and i have had both breeds since i was a kid, have always been the greatest with kids! the last shep i had at home stayed there when i got married cause we were in an apartment and she was used to a farm, neither my wife OR mom could smack the sons lil but without getting a warning from her as she hearded him off someplace "safe". imagine her reaction to a stranger!
my dobies were the same, big babies with the kids, shared their toys, bones and cookies like litter mates.
wife often found the son sitting on the back steps...one biscut for him, one for the dog...not people biscuts either0 -

The absolute best gun dog I ever owned was a German Shorthaired Pointer. The best noise of any and was an excellent retriever too. would hunt birds, coons, deer or anything else you wanted. Wasn't gun shy and was very obedient. He also was a fierce guard dog and extremely protective. 0 -
Guard dogs: Doberman, Rottweiler, German Shepherd
Gun dogs: Birds - GSP, Vizsla, Weimaraner
Waterfowls - any of the labs, golden retriever0 -
I've been around alot of Dobermans. If you do get one and want it to do well with kids make sure you socialize it quite often. The breed seems to be a 1 person dog and can be pissy. Personally I prefer and trust Rottys much more around my daughters. Our dog has been through all kinds of interesting dress up games and ear tugging in her day. She doesn't like strangers much when we aren't around though which is a great quality. 0 -
course here is a REAL hunting dog... 0 -
Never had a watchdog per se, though my Irish Wolf Hound did well enough just with his presence.
Gun dog on the other hand, Spinnone is my choice. Inteligent, confident and independent. Lenny will run fifty yards and swim ten to make a retrieve rather than swim thirty. That and he's locked up on birds that an English Pointer ran past.0 -
I had Dobes while growing up......great dogs, by far my "breed of choice".
On the other other hand, the German Shepherd I have now may be the best dog I've ever had......I just wish she didn't shed so much.
Personally, I don't think you can make a better choice than a Dobe, Rotty or Shepherd....all are great breeds0
