the teaching prospect said, "Let me see if I've got this right:
You want me to go into that room with all those kids, correct their
disruptive behavior, observe them for signs of abuse, monitor their
dress
habits, censor their T-shirt messages, and instill in them a love for
learning.
You want me to check their backpacks for weapons, wage war on drugs and
sexually transmitted diseases, and raise their sense of self esteem and
personal pride.
You want me to teach them patriotism and good citizenship,
sportsmanship and fair play, and how to register to vote, balance a
checkbook, and apply for a job.
You want me to check their heads for lice, recognize signs of antisocial
behavior, and make sure that they all pass the state exams.
You also want me to provide them with an equal
education regardless of their handicaps, and communicate regularly with
their parents in English and Spanish by letter, telephone, newsletter,
and
report card.
You want me to do all this with a piece of chalk, a blackboard, a
bulletin
board, a few books, a big smile, and a starting salary that qualifies me
for
food stamps.
You want me to do all this and then you tell me........

I made a copy of this for one of my nieces who still teaches. I have two nieces who started teaching about four or five years ago and one has already gone on to greener pastures.
We had a family get together Thursday and I asked her if she was still teaching. She said she's teaching fourth, fifth and sixth grades now. She was telling me what it's like teaching these days. It would have been funny if it weren't true. She had some bruises on her left arm from stopping one girl from killing another girl. She said she never gets between two fighters except to prevent an actual murder.
The police came to her classroom Thursday morning and picked up two of her inmates students. They had done a couple of burglaries on their way to school. I asked if they let them out on bail to continue their education. She said no, they are still in custody. The kids didn't see anything out of the ordinary about doing some burglary on their way to school and didn't understand what all the fuss was about.
She told me the School District has these little books (or booklets) she is supposed to read to the inmates students. She said these little books make no pretense of being educational, just pure propaganda. They give her four of these little books each week. She told the District she didn't like their reading material and was going to provide he own. Surprisingly, they agreed to it. I said "How's this for an idea? Why don't you teach them how to read?" She got a pretty good laugh out of that.
I don't think a society who throws away its future generations can survive. Maybe we're only throwing away thirty percent, but that's enough to do some pretty major damage. I don't think we can totally fault the school system. We can't even totally fault the government. Just because the government makes it easier to do the wrong thing than the right thing doesn't mean we have to do the wrong thing. I mainly fault each individual parent millions of times which makes it a dilemma (a problem for which there is no solution).0
