Could something like this be considered.....
..a threat, and possibly illegal..?
"...but answering the door with my 870 in my hand and racking in a shell while telling them (nicely) that it could be severely unhealthy to return..."

Hope not, cause I have done it more than once. 0 -
Well, I was just wondering the true leagality of it. Not that I'd be
above doing the same, but doubt that it's lawful.
Even I, who lives pretty much a hermit/recluse leave me alone lifestyle
have allowed JW's to visit a few times...and when I tired of it, I
found lawful (responsible)ways to greatly limit their visits.
I believe, even if you had your property posted, etc, it would be
unlawful to threaten bodily harm while racking a gun. It seems the
lawful thing to do would be call the law to handle it, or have
restraing orders placed, etc.0 -
[8D]--In California, thats called--

It's your property. The only threat is if they come back. So by coming back they are looking for trouble correct?
I personally don't agree with handling it that way. Why be like that to people who aren't really doing anything harmfull to you or yours?0 -
I think he was in the right.
As long as the muzzle wasn't pointed AT them.
I have done the same thing to unwanted visitors and had my concealed permit jerked once, because of it.
It took the Sheriff three weeks to determine that I had the absolute right to do that, as long as I didn't threaten anyone or point the shotgun at them. At which time he sent a Deputy to my house, with a written apology, to return the permit.
But then, this is Godawful Orygun.

Seriously, I'd hate to think that I needed a gun to convince anyone to not show up on my property again. I was taught not to whip it out unless I was ready to use it. I once had a carload of them come by every so often. One would get out and we would talk. He was very polite and respectful, never pushy. I finally got weary of them coming so I explained to him that it would be best if he never came back. He thanked me for my time and left. Haven't seen him since.0 -
Had a similar incident as longsantafe. Been hearing some stories of some theiving going on. There was a light knock at the door very late one night. Didn't want to be "unprepared". Answered the door, with gun visible, and it was a sheriff deputy looking for a cousin of mine. I didn't show the gun in a defensive manner, and there was no problem. 0 -
Whether it's legal or not probably depends on where your house is. I don't see why it would be illegal, but I've never found it necessary with the JWs. I just tell them I'm a Baptist, plan to stay a Baptist and don't have time to listen to them. They just go away.
They will be back anyway. You scare two or three of them this Sunday, next Sunday it's a different bunch who don't even know about it. You're not likely to scare all of them. It's just one of those minor irritants in life you have to put up with. They eventually migrate to another location and you get a break until they rotate back to your area.0
