ice road truckers
I recently finished watching a marathon of the latest season of the show.
Something got me wondering. Why would you spend hundreds of thousands of dollars/day for vehicles, fuel, lodging, insurances, and income for personnel when there could be a small fleet of LCAC transports to move cargo during the winter months for the same price?
I mean a vehicle w/an 80 ton load capacity and can move it 300km at 35km/h over a questionable road surface. This would be better, no?

On tonight's episode Hugh the Polar Bear was stuck out in the middle of no where. So he said hey I should get my new rifle out. So he reaches in back of the cab and pulls out what he calls his 1953 SKS 15.
He says look, its even got a bayonet and proceeds to unfold it.
He pulls a stripper clip out and loads it in his cab then he proceeds to shoot some oranges and a can of soup his so called survival food.
Some people just should not be allowed to have guns.0 -
This is going to be a new show on history channel.
I will be watching it! I allways wanted to go drive the ice roads when I was still driveing truck!

i can't watch it anymore, it makes me nervous for one, but the narrator just gets on my nerves, every other word is overly dramatized, if the viewer cannot realize the apparent danger without the use of the narrator and his drama they are not to bright, the show is good all by itself 0 -

Anyone else watch this History Channel program about the winter truck drivers hauling freight up the Dalton Highway from just north of Fairbanks to Purdue Bay?
It's a 500 mile journey on roads covered with ice that encompasses some of the most beautiful scenery in America.0 -
All day marathon on the History Channel today, starting at Noon, Central Time. Every episode, and it's going to run all afternoon, ending with the season (series?) finale. I'm definatly watching it. 0 -

Trucking up to the North Slope of AK. Some of the 'roads' are across frozen lakes.
Couldn't pay me enough to be out in -40?F/-50?F roads/frozen lakes and rivers in
the Alaskan winter.0 -
They said in the 2 months you can equal a years pay. Besides it's nature and it would actually seem safer than driving amonst all the people on most interstates and highways here in the US. 0 -
I'll have to catch that sometime this week. I saw the previews and some of the guys looked a bit nutty[:D]. I suppose it take a little bit of the crazies to do a job like that. The History Channel is trying to cash in on the "Deadly Catch" type of show (what ever happened to the lobster fisherman knock off?). 0 -
i watched it last night, made me nervous watching it, 16" of ice in a semi, -35farenhiet, if the ice breaks it can freeze over before you get to it, watching/hearing the ice crack as you drive over it, i don't think so , i wouldn't walk out on that sheet 0 -

I too watched it last night.
I still say as a person who drove for 16 years that it would be the ultimate challenge for a truck driver!
I would love to go do it for at laest 1 season.
When it is that cold you actually can get pretty good tracktion in ice, so that part of it is not the big factor.
The biggest worry is when they talked about the wave that forms under the ice. The faster you go the bigger the wave that forms and if it gets to big it will blow a hole in the ice.
Also the long hours day in and day out will wear you down. Some of those trips at the speeds they are driveing takes a driver over 15 hours to complete, and they do not stop (except for break downs or emergencies) untill they reach the destination. Then they grab a few short hours sleep and go back for another load.
Those guy who build the ice roads have it down to a science and use utrasound and such to make and maintian those roads to consistantly make sure they are of proper thickness to hold the heavy loads to make it to where as long as the proper proticalls are followed that there is not as much danger as one might think.0 -

Everyone allready thinks that truck drivers are nothing but foul mouthed speed takeing scum of the earth derolicks anyway!
I think in the show they showed a little different side proving that truckers are just real people! expecially at home!
Yes it did show the foul mouth side a little bit, but really you would find that at most everyday working mans job anyway!0 -

I guess as a third generation truck driver who drove for 16 years I just did not see that in the show!
I just saw the type of people that I spent all my life around. Down to earth everyday working men out makeing a living for thier families!0 -
I didn't see it last night, but I saw something like that a while back. I think it was on the History Channel. If you can make a year's pay in two months, I think I'll just work the whole year.
A year or so before I went to Antarctica a young third class Equipment Operator decided he would take a shortcut from McMurdo Station to Williams Field across the Ross Ice Shelf. He was driving a D-8 Caterpillar tractor with LGP treads. The LGP (low ground pressure) treads put less ground pressure per square inch, but they actually weigh a lot more than regular treads. He hit a weak spot on the ice. He is still under the Ross Ice Shelf in his D-8. They named a Gymnasium after him at Davisville, Rhode Island.
Nope. I think I'll find another way to make a living.0
