Respnse to Large Dog?
I was walking down a well used public path in the woods today. I noticed a young guy walking toward me with an unleased large Rotweiler. I moved to the side of the path as far out of their way as I could. When they got about 15' ftom me the dog ran at me and stopped about 2' in front of me blocking the path. It froze and starred at me, making no movement (no friendly tail wagging here). I also froze, and we starred at each other for about 15-20 seconds. The owner kept walking, and after he got about 25 yards away yelled for the dog, the dog then ran to its owner. It was a very tense 15-20 seconds, with that dog starring at me and blocking my path. I had both pepper spray and a firearm, and only my love of dogs kept me from taking action. At what point would you take action? By the way, I yelled to the guy that he should control his dog, he just responded with obscenities.

Not going to read this one too closely because I don't need to. I've followed several links here recently that indicated several of us, including myself, are confused about who is the dominant species in this country.Is it humans, or is it free ranging dogs? I pepper sprayed a rott once with some Fox 5.3 OC. It's the strongest OC formula I have found (5.3 million Scoville heat units). It slowed the dog for about 2 or 3 seconds, just long enough for me to jump a fench.
Now if a dog rushes me I go for the gun or the tase if I have it on me. not the spray0 -

i'd just busted a cap into it and kept on walking....but in this day and age you would be charged for murder i suppose something about companion animals have more rights than you do. 0 -
Here is what no one has said yet that bothers me. The other person uses his dog as a lethal weapon to intimidate from the way I read it.
Guy walking, dog comes up and "detains" you until the owner has pass you and feels the need to call the dog.
So say I am walking down the road with my wife and I see another person on the road. When getting close I run up on him with a weapon and stare him down and "detain" him until my wife safely passed then go and catch up with her..... How is this case any different? You were unlawfully detained by this person by extension of his dog. I would have a VERY big problem with that part.
LEO would have gotten a report at least. Maybe more, like you have said I wasent there.
What happens if next time the dog does this to a kid or older person or someone unknowing about dog and unable to defend them self? [V][V][V]0 -
They only way the dog would have gotten with in 2' is if I had missed and missed many times.

Dogs are the main reason I carry when riding my bike or walking/running.
Just last Friday I passed a yard with 2 big shepherds in it and the homeowner working in the yard. They where less that 5 feet from the sidewalk. The way the yard had the shrubs I was close when I saw them other wise I would have crossed the street. I had my hand on my Glock as I passed. They looked at me and that was all.0 -
I was walking in town a few weeks ago when I was charged by the seemingly ubiquitous pit bull mix. It was serious, head down and growling.
I pulled my pistol and pointed it at the dog. I reckon this dog had seen a gun before, maybe even had been shot at, because it immediately turned and went the other way. Fast.0 -
In my opinion it really doesn't matter if your reaction was the right one or not; it is over and you came out okay, this time! If you plan future walks in similar situations I'd become very familiar with local leash laws, your legal rights, etc., and if you're going to carry a concealed weapon I hope you have a license in the event you need to use your weapon. What's done is done; just be prepared for future situations so there is no hesitation if you need to react! 0 -
Just took the trash out to the road, my new neighbor about 250 yards down the road, has three dogs running loose in his yard. One full grown rotwieler one younger rot and a lab. I'll be darned if that adult rot didn't start barking at me and progress to the edge of his yard. My first thought, after it stopped moving forward, was what a timely post that would have made had the stupid thing attacked me. [:(!] 0 -
You should've called the local LEO's and reported what took place. Nothing might be done by the local prosecutor (no actual attack, your word against his, etc), but you'd be documenting the incident in case it happens again and you have to shoot.
BTW- Using a handgun on a Rott at close range is a good way to get bit. Barring a brain pan hit, handguns don't work well at all for immediately stopping dogs. I've seen them highly mobile after multiple .357 and .45 hits, even with top of the line defensive HP's.0 -
I worked a case last week where a guy was riding a scooter everyday to and from some yard work he was doing. One guy owned a Great Pyronese(SP) and it would chase him. He stopped one day and told the owner he should not let that dog run loose or he was going to kill it. One day it caught him and sunk its teeth in his left but cheek then their was a large abrasion where the dog had lost its grip and let go. He fired 2 shots with a 9MM and killed the dog. The owner wanted me to charge him for killing his dog. I knew at that time it was going to be Civil and he would have to obtain warrants. Until I seen the victim's wounds and heard his story. The victim would not seek medical attention nor obtain a warrant. I turned the case over to animal control, I havent heard anything since then. 0 -

Good Post! I imagine I would have to be bitten before I would shoot a dog, since I enjoy them so much. That said, you never know how you will react until you are in the situation. Sometimes you will know right away that you are facing a dog that is very aggressive and you just know it will never back off! The wild dog packs that you can encounter in the Oregon wilds are a good example of this. Rare but folks have run into them before and its not a fun situation to have to deal with.
When you have to shoot a uncontrolled dog in this area of the country the courts and juries have not been kind to the shooters.0 -

Damn if the above doesn't pretty well say it all in just a few sentences.
About 5AM (still dark) I was sitting on my motorcycle in a deserted, large, seculed parking lot. Getting ready to open up a government building for the day. Despite leash law in Overland Park, KS, 3 very large dogs trotted across the parking lot in a course that was going to take them right past me on my motorcycle. There was a larg German Shepherd, A Doberman and a very large third dog I didn't indentify. As the three passed in front of me, all three looked directly at me (I have remained quiet and motionless) and I hear a low growl from at least one dog, although they did not stop. At the growl I put my hand on my sidearm and looked squarely at the dogs. Dogs kept on trotting. Had they attacked I would have of course shot them. I phoned 9-1-1 and advised them of the three, possibly agressive dogs on the loose and I was concerned that when the school kids started walking to school or to the bus stop, the dogs might hurt one of them.
Never heard anymore, but anyone who thinks that large dogs will never think about hurting an adult are mistaken in my book.0 -
That close with a big Rotweiler who can do a lot of damage or kill you if he attacks my gun comes out and I am well within my rights to do so. Once the owner takes control I call LE and let them get the story from me first. I am a dog lover but it's the owners that are idiots. "Oh my dog wouldn't hurt anybody", well I don't want to be the exception to that rule with that kind of dog. I wouldn't want to face my Chocolate Lab if she got mad, she has some big, sharp teeth but is totally non-agressive to people. But how do strangers know that? 0 -
Here, if a dog comes after you, it is a law that the owner has them on a leash with tags on it.

I'd a shot it, yesiree! it came right up to me. if course, it was going to bite me! (oohh, I can't stand to get bit!) it got closer than 5 feet, so I can say "I was in fear for my life" heh heh good excuse, huh? what are they gonna say? good excuse to whip out my gun and make me feel reeeeal bad. I'm a tough guy, gotta prove it every once in a while by making up excuses to shoot animals. just like the other day, I walked past this guy's yard (he let his dogs run loose in his yard!) if they would have ran up to me, blammo! I coulda got all 3 of them and ran down the street before anybody even knew what happened! hee hee. cuz I'm macho, see? why just walk on the other side of the street, or heaven forbid, just not walk past the frikkin yard, when I can do whatever I please and shoot them if they get too close? why not? "who's your dominant species? who's your dominant species?" blammo! hahaha! how'd ya like that? wha? the owner? his kids, who were just playing with their dogs a few minutes ago? aahh, who cares what they think, I got to shoot my gun a few times. anyways, did I tell you about that german shepherd that was growling at me down the street? busted out the .22-.250 and popped him like a groundhog. guts splattered everywhere. you shoulda seen it, it was great. maybe I can wait until the neighbor gets another one and get it on video next time, put it on youtube. wait a minute, I got a better idea. next time I'll leave my gun at home and kill a dog with a knife. that will really prove I'm macho. big man. mano-a-doggo. (of course I'm too much of a pansy to do it with my bare hands, but hey, I got something to prove, and my knife proves it! I can't lose.) hhmm, mebbe I can speed up the process by throwing a steak in the yard and wait for one to come and get it. then I can run out and kick it. heh. then it'll fall over and I can tie a noose around its neck and hang it from a tree, that'll show the neighbors they aren't suppose to let their damn dogs go running loose. that'll teach them. wait till they come to get their pet's carcass! it's on my property, nope, they can't have it! mine now! mebbe I can stab it a few times with my knife. heh heh. or shoot it a few times. hee hee. buschmaster, can you tell the difference between/among friendly, curious, aggressive and dangerous dogs. If you can, then you already know your post was unwarranted. If you can't, then I'll tell you that you need to learn.
There are people as you described in your post which is one of the reasons my dog doesn't run loose. Mainly to protect her from traffic, but also idiots who would torment or harm her.
If I or anyone with me is attacked by a dog without provocation I'll likely kill the dog. At the same time, anyone who attacks my dog without provocation will cause me to use unauthorized deadly force. At my age I don't need to spend my last few years in prison, so my dog doesn't run loose.0
