? Video editing program question ?

I need a video editing program. I had about decided to buy the SONY Vegas program. It looks like it's about what I need, but none of their advertising tells you very much about it. I sent them an eMail asking my question, which is:

My computer is about five years old and doesn't have input jacks to accept data from a video camera. Can the video be input from a DV Disk with a DVD drive? If not, what kind of hardware, cards, etc. do I need to use your program?

SONY sent me an eMail saying they had answered my question, and all I had to do was click the link and enter my password to read their reply. Since I didn't have a password, I clicked "forgot your password" and they sent an eMail saying my password was "(none set)".

(none set) and none set didn't work as a password, so I sent them another eMail telling them I didn't have a password and (none set) didn't work.

SONY sent me another eMail saying they had answered my second question, and all I had to do was click the link and enter my password to read their reply.

Anyhow, does anybody here know the answer? One that I can get without a password?

    I'm assuming you're using WinXP. If so, go to start, all programs, then accessories. Windows Movie Maker should be listed. If not, you can download it here. It's a "free" download.

    If you have a vacant PCI slot (most computers do), you can purchase a USB/Firewire combo card for $20.00 or less. They are simple to install. You will then have USB ports (I'm surprised you don't already have USB ports) and Firewire port(s). All modern cameras/video recorders "feed" into a computer by USB and/or Firewire.
    Firewire is, also, referred to as IEEE 1394. USB/Firewire cards can be purchased at many retailers and online (example).

    I use Adobe Premier Elements. VERY easy to learn and will accept any format movie. You can use the minidv as a source as long as you have the player for it.

    If you are going to be doing video editing, you really need a 2GB plus processor and 1GB of RAM. Any less and you will really suffer!

    I have a gang of USB 2.0 ports. I thought (probably my worst problem) that since the camera only came with video/sound cables for input to VCR/DVD recorders that was also used for computer input. It appears that I do have Windows Movie Maker. So all I need is a USB 2.0 cable for the camera?

    I also have some DVDs which I don't have the original digital tape for. Is there a way to use them as input?

    It looks like if I can get smart enough to use this Windows Movie Maker, you might have saved me a cool hundred bucks. [:)]

    you can get a simple pci card for the in put from cables, and yes if you have a dvd camera you can load it directly, as far as what program, i cannot give a honest answer because i myself have not done enough of it in my opinion



    did you register with sony to get a password

    I have one of those little JVC Wal-Mart specials. It uses the little digital tapes which run for about half an hour. When I fill up a digital tape, I copy it to DVD and scratch the tape. So now I have some DVDs which are unedited. I can't really edit them with the DVD recorder/player because there is a delay between hitting the play/pause/record buttons and the DVD actually doing what you told it to do, that causes a sloppy edit.

    I have a DVD drive on my computer, but I don't want to spend a hundred bucks on a program and find out it won't take a DVD drive as input.

    go to download.com, find a program or two, give it a try for free, at least you will know if you need to spend any money

    I think I'm going to try this Windows Movie Maker first if I can get smart enough to use it.

    One other thing, James.

    Video uses a "lot" of memory (hard drive space). Make sure you have a substantial amount of hard drive space available.

    I have 54 GB free space one my hard drive, 1 GB RAM and a Pentium(R) 4 CPU 2.00GHz processor. Judging from what slipgate said it looks like it might be marginal, but I think I'll give it a shot.
