Muzzleloader Safety Help
I'm President of the Pendleton Sportsman's Club at Camp Pendleton and have been trying for the last three years to convince the powers to be that muzzleloader hunting should be permitted. Their main objection is that muzzleloader shooting would cause fires. As you can imagine here in Southern California the risk of causing a fire and the potential liability fallout is extremely high. Does anyone have or know of any studies or reports that address the likelyhood of muzzleloader shooting causing fires that I can use and reference to address, convince, and reassure the hierarcy that muzzleloader hunting is safe and should be allowed. ... DON'T KNOW IF IT WILL BE ANY HELP, BUT PENNSYLVANIA STARTED A MUZZLE LOADER HUNT IN THIS STATE DURING OCTOBER ABOUT THREE YEARS AGO FOR A WEEK LONG SEASON. AT THIS TIME YOU CANE USE IN-LINES OR THE TRADITIONAL CAPLOCK OR FLINTLOCK. THE STATE IS VERY DRY AT THIS TIME OF THE YEAR DUE TO THE LEAVES FALLING AND THEIR DRY STATE. IN ALL OF THE TIME IN THE WOODS DURING THIS TIME OF THE YEAR, I HAVE NEVER SEEN ANYONE NOR HEARD OF ANYONE STARTING A FIRE DUE TO THE USE OF A MUZZLELOADER.
I WOULD THINK THAT YOUR STATE HAS A RIFLE & PISTOL ASSOCIATION OR TRY THE NRA, I KNOW THAT THEY HAVE A MUZZLELOADER GROUP. YOU COULD ALSO CONTACT YOUR STATE'S WILDLIFE CONSERVATION GROUP, THEY MAY HELP YOU IN YOUR ENDEVOR.

I have fired mine at the range and in the woods many times, with the ground covered by dry leaves and pine needles. I have never started a fire. Also, I have never heard of anyone else doing it. 0 -
Friend of mine set his hay meadow on fire with one. But, he put in double powder and was setting on the ground when he shot it.Hay meadow was about a foot high. Set it on fire out to about 20 foot. If you load a normal charge and shoot standing, shouldn't have any problem.[:)] 0 -
Well, the Union Army did manage to set the forest on fire during the Battle of the Wilderness in May of 1864.[:D] 0 -

Probably with hastily and multipally loaded charges. I have been shooting black powder for 40 years and have never once heard of any brush fires attributable to a muzzle loader.0 -

You don't think that the fact that the two sides had close to 170,000 men fighting in the same area, along with quite a few cannon might have had a bit to do with it?0 -

I have no empirical data to back up my claim, but the notion that black powder hunting will cause forest fires is a lot of bs.0 -
Danger of fire from muzzle loader shooting!?!?!?!???? I think smoking cigarets is a MUCH more serious fire hazard! Maybe California should outlaw smoking! 0 -

They have in public buildings, several communities and beaches have also included the ban to "public spaces"0 -
Georgia DNR introduced a special muzzleloading season ten years ago.
Contact them and ask your question. They would certainly know if muzzleloading causes forest fires.0 -
Thank you to all who responded. I will continue to pursue this and I hope to some day report that muzzleloader hunting on Camp Pendleton is authorized.
