Take a look at this if you live between Louisiana and New Mexico and as far North as Missouri or Illinois. This is the most widely distributed scorpion. Pics you can show your son, and imformation here as well. These are not considered to be of medical importance (not life threatening), but they are not a lot of fun either, with a sting said to be like a wasp sting.

Children are great. I have a 8 year old niece who is like my daughter. One day we were coming to town and a opossum was in the road. She says, look at that giant rat!!!

When I was a kid, my mother told me about crawdads, and described them as having a long body, two arms with pinchers, and a tail. She said that if you pick them up by grasping the body (carapace) between the thumb and forefinger, they can't reach back and pinch you.

One day, I moved something and there on the floor was a crawdad. It had two arms with pinchers, a long body and a tail. Remembering what Mom said, I reached down to pick it up properly. Fortunately, Mom saw me and asked me what I was doing. I told her I had found a crawdad and was going to catch it. She quickly came to where I was, and she had a spatula in her hand for she was cooking. She scooped the creature up with the spatula, and deposited it onto the still-hot skillet, where it died.

Then, she explained to me the difference between a crawdad and a scorpion. I had never seen either one up to that point.

I am sure glad I didn't grab the scorpion.

Many years later, one of the neighborhood kids caught a tiny crawdad in a puddle. When he got tired of it, he gave it to me, and I put it in my fish tank. The darn thing lived there for over a year, ate and went through several skin changes, and got really big. Then, one day it tried to shed its skin, and something went wrong. I found it dead with its skin half-moulted.

That reminds me of when I was still living with my folks that i got up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and when I was done I started to head towards the door and out cran a black Scorpion out from under the sink.
It stood between me and the bathroom door so i took a glass and put it over it and a piece of paper under the glass and I kept it for a long time till it died from old age.
