20 gauge or 12 gauge?
Is a 20 gauge shotgun more suitable for young person than a 12 gauge? Are there any advantages or disavantages? Thanks

When all the other kids were shooting 410s and 20s, I was proud to have a 12. It was an old H&R Topper model single shot and beat the snot out of me at 12 years old, but by God I shot a 12 just like the grown ups. Got real good with it too. 0 -
I grew up with a 20. I have since bought 2 12's, one of which sits in the bedroom(Mossberg Persuader) for protection and the other sits in the gun cabinet. I always carry the 20.

I'm not making ANY judgements about ANY one, but my honest feeling-
10 ga. Grunt. Gotta have only the biggest most powerful. Anything less is for wussies.
12 ga. is for three types of people- neophytes who just wanna get themselves a shotgun; people who feel that anything less isn't manly; and people who like to overgun.
16 ga. is for refined folks who appreciate a nice gun and an oddball to boot- but to be honest it is still a bit overgunning for some game.
20 ga. is for girls.
28 ga. - what planet did YOU fall down to earth from? I mean, it is even weirder than the 16 ga!
.410 bore- for kids. Suitable for doves but little else (ignoring all the rabbits my dad has killed with his, lol)

Truth be told, every one will do the exact same job except for waterfoul. There I'd stay away from anything smaller than a 16- and really anything less than 12.
Perceived and absolute recoil depend on load, not gauge, as well as gun weight and fit.
I'd say 16 would be the perfect choice given it is sort of in-between; but load availablility is spotty.
Go for the 20.0 -

Real Skeet shooters that are any good at all use a .410 down here just to keep in shape for when they need the 20 or 12 in compitition.

Ya gotta be kidding saying "the 20 GA is for girls!" I say AGAIN go with the 20 GA. But on the subject of 28 GA I remember meeting one of my father's friends who was an awesome skeet and trap shooter ... and he was a super big fan of the 28 GA! Boy you'd have to practice a lot ! 0 -

12 and 20 gauge ammo can be bought anywhere. Other gauge shells when you can find them are more expensive. If you load, there's no difference.
If you're doing a lot of shooting, a 20 is a lot easier on the shoulder and the gun is much lighter to carry all day in the field.
An 1100 Light Wt 20 gauge Remington wouldn't be a mistake.0 -

A 20 gauge is good for young, old and anything in between. The .410 is a good gauge (caliber) too, but I wouldn't recommend it for a first gun. The .410 is mostly for more experienced shotgunners. The 12 gauge wouldn't be a bad choice for a first gun, but I'd rather go with the 20. 0
