I think that the most important thing to remember about our president is that he is doing his very best to help us. He's had all the smart people talk to him, he's seen intelligence that we haven't, and he's set a course for our country. As several people in his administration have correctly pointed out, dissent is not really helpful. It weakens morale, makes people doubt, and strengthens the resolve of our enemies.
President Bush has shown himself to be a smart and crafty man, attending the finest schools in our country and doing very well in business. He has been elected twice to the highest secular office in the land, both times beating people who were much "smarter." I think we would do well to support his plans and to watch what we say. What if some of the troops overseas are reading this? Imagine how it would make them feel to see people criticizing the president.0 -

I think he did pretty well, with what he has to work with. I really blame the Republican congress, more than Bush, for not getting anything done over the years. If you all think the dems are going to put the troops on the border whenever they come home, you are nuts. Dems didn't even want the National Guard on the border. And several of the politicians, even one right on the Arizona border, that ran on strong anti-illegal immigration stances this last election lost. So that is not as big a problem with most of America as it is with some people on this board. 0 -

I read parts of the speech. Did not watch the speech. It is a pretty good read.
Problem is this. We have had 6 years of a Republican majority house, Republican majority Senate, and a Republican president. What has gotten done? Is there any real change other than we are at war in a war we did not want and did not go looking for?

Health care
Health Insurance
Economy
Budget
Deficit
crime
moral decay
Is there any REAL change from what we had under Clinton (who I despise and that broom rider he is married to)??????
If you can not get things done when you have ALL the power to do them -- how can we stand by and say Republicans are the answer anymore than we can blame the democrats?
The problem is we have people elected because they want the position not because the want to do or can do the job that they are elected to.

A couple more things:
I would be frightened to live in a country where there was no dissent. NOTHING is black and white, so if you've got a situation where nobody is voicing their discontent, I think you have a serious problem.

They are those who would support the man if he were eating babies on a live tv feed (probably about .005%), those who would support him if he were convicted of eating babies behind closed doors (about .05%), those who would support him if he were convicted of beating babies (about .5%)....
I'm being flippant, but my point is that some will always stand behind him. I was looking at a graph of his ratings since September 2001 earlier tonight. Certainly, there are peaks and valleys in his approval rating but if I squinted my eyes and imagined a smoothed curve drawn through it I thought I saw what would be an exponential decline: support drops off rather rapidly when the ratings are high, but progressively slower as the ratings decrease. This, to me, suggested that for some people, it is just harder for GW to do something bad enough to lose their support. That's intuitively obvious, but I really thought I could see it in the graph.0
