A University of Georgia student has been charged with seven felony counts of animal cruelty for allegedly beating a litter of puppies to death.

Athens police said Ashley Council, 20, violently killed the weeks-old puppies and left them in a box behind a convenience store last month.
Ashley Council
Reached by phone Tuesday, Council said she had been advised by her parents not to talk about the charges. "All I can say is I did not do what they are accusing me of," she said.
Council had been employed as a clerical worker at UGA's Veterinary Teaching Hospital since last August. She was suspended from her job Monday, pending the outcome of the investigation, UGA officials said.
Police traced a shipping label on the box, which originally held a comforter from JCPenney, to Council. Animal control officers also found a long metal pipe on top of the box that held the seven puppies' bodies.Council was arrested early Thursday morning and taken to Athens Clarke County jail. She was released on $7,000 bond, $1,000 per count.
Athens-Clarke County Police Detective Rebecca Taft said the puppies were covered with bruises and some had open wounds.
"They suffered," Taft said. "They were all huddled together in a little bunch."
Taft said the black, tan and white puppies were a small breed mix and she estimated their age between seven and eight weeks old. Doctors at the vet teaching hospital, where Council works, performed a necropsy on the animals Sept. 12 to determine the cause of death.
"It was too early to tell what kind of dogs they were going to be," she said.
Council was a part-time student clerical worker and her job did not involve contact with animals, vet school spokeswoman Tracy Giese said in an e-mail.
Taft said Council adopted a dachshund from Animal Control in June. She called Animal Control the morning she allegedly killed the puppies to ask about surrendering them. She was told she could bring the puppies in, said Patrick Rives, animal control superintendent.
"She was told all she had to do was live in Clarke County and it wasn't a problem."
The student was not supposed to have dogs in her apartment, Taft said.
On her Facebook Internet profile, Council said she is a 2005 graduate of Stockbridge High School majoring in pre-law and political science. She lists "Animal Planet" among her favorite television shows and belongs to a group called "Animal Rights."
According to Kim Ellis, director of Student Judicial Programs, all cases made against UGA students by Athens-Clarke Police are reported to her office for evaluation under the student code of conduct. Penalties can range from writing an essay to expulsion, depending on the severity of the finding.

She does have that intelligent college student appearance. 0 -
What a silly article - what passes for "news" anymore is disturbing.
I've got a couple of boxes of frozen bream here at the house - most were scaled and gutted and had their heads removed while most of them were alive.
Can it be that a citizen of this Republic can no longer dispose of his/her property whether it is a pen full of hogs or a box of dogs without praying for the permission of the state?
And as far as this detective "dog expert" determining that the animals suffered or that they were huddled together as though that litter of mongrels were in some sort of futile defensive posture is ridiculous.
"It was too early to tell what kind of dogs they were going to be." What? Does anyone other than detective Taft believe that they were going to go through some sort of transformation and become something other than what they were? She must be quite a detective.
Unbelievable.0 -

She had arranged to turn the puppies over to the pound, where some of them probably would have been adopted.
Instead, she beat the puppies to death with a pipe.
And this is ok with you?
What technique do you use to kill puppies?
Jeffrey Dahmer started out, as a child, by killing puppies. Tell the forum, have you ever had the urge to kill and eat a human?0 -

Look at craigslist, any mutt will bring a little cash, and there is a big difference between euthanasia and beating to death [:(!]....

Hmmm...and all it took was a young black woman from the South and a box of dead mongrel pups to disolve the facade of Second Amendment phonies on this forum - here individual liberty and personal property rights are becoming archaeic and laughable. With folks like Griggs and KSU and other like-minded morons and zombies shuffling down the PETA path, Jefferson, Franklin and Madison are becoming hollow symbols of long-abandoned principle. 0 -

I don't call myself a Christian so I don't believe there is a special place in hell for you and others like you.
I do believe I could find a hole for you and people like you though.
Enjoying or even tolerating the needless suffering of another thinking creature really muddles the line between human and beast. [V]

i thought it whent without saying that bludgeoning puppies is a sick thing to do, it just struck me as wierd to see an animal rights stance taken on this forum of hunters and meat eating manly men.0 -
We hunt to get the meat not because the deer (or other animals) are inconvenient to take care of. Big difference there, slackmason. 0 -

You must not know many hunters, I don't know one who wishes his harvest to suffer, if fact you will find the opposite is more true,
a quick and painless kill is always preferred over the game suffering.0 -

this is true, i dont know a single person who hunts.
so i am alittle ignorant here.
to get this discussion back on track
i also dont know WHY she beat the dogs to death, if she did.0 -
Just seems to me that she took the "easy" way out. Looking back she probably wishes she had taken them to the pound. 0
