Turkish Mauser

I have my brother's 1943 Turkish Mauser that I am looking forward to shooting. I am cleaning it and just picked up some ammo. Is there anything I need to look out for or be aware of when shooting this old piece? I have never shot a bolt action rifle like this and am pretty geeked about trying it.

    It shoots like any other bolt rifle. Just beware of you front teeth if it has the extra sling swivel on the left hand side. I found out the hard way![B)]

    Well, not a black eye but a chipped tooth.

    People have warned me of a strong kickback , so your advice is well taken. I was told to keep it tight to the shoulder or I could expect a ride.

    Just normal inspection. I have tree'd a few jap rifles. Find a tree and put it between yourself and the rifle and fire it. I sometimes use welding gloves. [:D][:D][:D]

    They are a decent mauser. I'd not say the recoil is all that bad. The two that I have owned, the only problem I had with them was they didn't want to shoot some of the surplus ammo I have with the hard primers. It seemed the firing pin was bit worn on them, I don't know if this is the case with all of them, but it was the case with two of them. If you pull the trigger, and it don't go bang, just flip the bolt up, then back down, that recocks it, many times they'll go ahead and fire on the second, or third try.

    These are great old rifles, I have one of them.
    Recoil is not that bad. If you are concerned about it, buy Winchester or Remington ammo. It is less powerful than the European 8mm.

    If you shoot surplus, beware that the primer contains a corrosive salt. This should be flushed with a few patches soaked in hot soapy water after shooting, then dried, and cleaned as normal. Make sure all the grease is removed from the bore and bolt before shooting.

    Have one, love to shoot it. good inspection is primary as some old parts can now be moving parts when they shouldn't be. I love the kick. Split many casings.

    I have purchased winchester ammo that I hope to try this weekend. Thanks for the advice.

    I assume you have an 8x57. It has a bit of kick but I don't think it's any worse than a 30-06. I have shot the 7x57 quite a bit. the 8x57 only a few times. I consider myself to be VERY recoil sensitive and it (8mm) really doesn't bother me. It may be that there was no scope to dot my eye with!!
