Not looking good.
There was vinyl flooring underneath. The vinyl comes up, but 1/2 the glues doesn't. They have also replaced some of the floor - with a different wood. We're exploring our options....Laminate, True wood, carpet....There was a 2' wide row of "Sand" from one entrance of the room to the other. Gross! At least if we have to go another route as far as flooring, it will have been cleared and cleaned before it gets put down.
This house will be sold in a few years and likely become a rental house. So expense is going to be kept at a minimum. Laminate is our best bet.0 -

I tried taking a hand sander to it. The old glue tears right through the pad. Time to try the old belt sander tomorrow before I go rent one. I'm probably just going to slap down some subfloor and laminate.

Do you have a ice chopper? the ones with about a 6" blade? put a good edge on it and scrape some of the glue off first.

I have removed two entire housefuls of carpet, and revealed beautiful oak floors underneath. The oak did not even need sanding, just pulled a million staples from the carpet pad, then a scrub and a mop. I asked myself, "Why in the world would someone install a rug over this floor?"
In your case the answer is clear.
Is that vinyl flooring a sheet, or is it squares, about 10 by 10 inch?
The squares have asbestos in them, best to leave them be and cover with plywood.0 -

The vinyl is sheet. The ugliest flooring I've ever seen. Someone told me this was a pet grooming buisness at one time. Pulling the carpet up, I believe it. Smells something awful of stale cat urine.
Since they replaced some planks in the floor with what looks like pine, There is no way I'll be able to get a consistant stain throughout the room. We plan on doing the three large rooms, this dining room, the entry room to the house, and the front living room. Heading out today to buy probably $5-600 worth of subfloor and god knows how much laminate.

Well now you know exactly why I wont have carpet. You can never get all the "stuff" out of it. Your sinus' will be much happier now! 0
