Gas Station food....
Is it just me or can some of the best cheap fast meals be bought at the gas stations? There are 2 that I like to hit. One down the road from my office.. I can get chicken, tater logs and a veggie for $2.99. The other is a truck stop where I ate today. The ladies behind the counter dont speak english but they cook some of the BEST beans and rice I have ever had. With 1/2 roasted chicken it is $4.99. I am now wishing I had picked up a plate for dinner tonight.

Oh yeah I forgot that one... mmmmm... the one that has biscuits and gravy...the elderly lady at the counter always has flour all over her. Home made biscuits and gravy for $2.00 $2.50 with a regular coffee. I know what's for breakfast!0 -
I'm not that impressed with their Buffet, all they ever seem to have is Ketchup, mustard, relish, pickles and onions. Most of the time they are in "packets" to boot. 0 -
Um, gas stations are for getting gas, maybe some washer fluid, and to take a leak on a road trip. 0 -

Funny you bring that up![:D] When we leave very early in the morning to go to a job site. Normally we have to stop and gas up the work trucks welders etc. We don't take a lunch break so we eat while we are driving to a job site.
The fine cuisine of the culinary artisan's purchased in the crew is as follows-
Myself- Bean and cheese burrito, trail mix, beef jerky, coffee, Rolaids, water.
Crew member #1 Pepperoni hot pocket, slim jim, red bull, coffee, water.
Crew member #2 Tuna Salad sandwich, Rock star, trail mix, sun flower seeds, water
Crew member #3 Big bag of jerky, Coffee, a can of Kodiak chew, water.
Crew member #4 Brings his own stuff, mostly gets coffee and water.0 -
I used to feel like you gaggirl. Then one day I stopped at a place called the "Red Apple" on Rt. 17 in New york. Neat diner/filling station nestled in the evergreens.
I ordered a burger and watched in horror as the rotund, greasy grill lady behind the counter wiped the spatula off by using her armpit then proceeded to flip my burger.
I always wondered what the secret sauce was.0 -
Couple of the local convenience store/ gas stations have a busy grill section- more like home cooking. Pulled their health dept inspections on line- they scored better than several of the restaurants here. 0 -

There's a Chevron station on 528 near 550 that serves the most flavorful posole I've ever had. Their red chile pork tamales are excellent, and the green chile stew is wonderful!
The Flying J truckstop on W. I-40 has a sub sandwich that is so packed with yummy meats and crisp lettuces that it's hard to get your mouth around it for that first bite!
Also enjoy the Love's jerky in the giant can, the chocolate espresso beans, and the all-you-can-eat hard boiled eggs for $3. Had a co-worker pull a Cool Hand Luke and eat 20 eggs in one sitting! If he'd known about the free salsa and cheese sauce; I bet he'd have eaten 30.0 -

Times have changed!
When I worked in a gas station in high school (mid 70's) we sold frozen sandwiches we heated in a little stn stl oven with some high heat light bulb!! YUCK!!!!!!0 -
Select-fire, I'm with you. Best chicken gizzards in Alamance county come from a gas station. He has fried chicken, pork chops, fried fish, fried okra, peach cobbler with so much butter in it that you can see it floating on top. and gravy biscuits. I always get two orders. One for now and one for later when I wish I had gotten an extra order. 0 -
You people frighten me. When on the road all I will eat is food from Subway. And on the last trip I found the newest worst Subway- in Twin Falls ID. Before that the Subway in Ely, Nevada was the worst. 0 -

The corporate standard was to drain the tuna over night in the utility sink. One of the closing duties was to open a large can of tuna turn it upside down over a 1 gal mayo jar in the utility sink over night. Then opening duty was to mix the tuna with the mayo then place in the line. No refridgeration of open tuna over night.... EWWWWWW!!!! 0
