Perky the Duck
FLORIDA: After enduring being shot, dragged by a dog and then having her presumed dead body thrown in a kitchen fridge, US wonder-fowl Perky the duck has again shown her lust for life during an operation to repair her injured wing.
Perky suddenly stopped breathing during the operation, said Noni Beck, wildlife rehabilitator at the Goose Creek Wildlife Sanctuary in Tallahassee, Florida.
"It was a rough day yesterday," she told smh.com.au.
She said she had taken Perky to a local veterinarian for the operation, where she was told it would be touch-and-go for the fragile bird.
The vet began to operate and had just finished pinning Perky's wing when she abruptly stopped breathing, Ms Beck said.
"He's giving her oxygen, he's kind of tapping on her chest - he actually took a needle and kind of stuck her, because a little pain response can make you gag - and then he turned to me and said, 'She's gone, I am so sorry.'"
But suddenly the duck came back.
"We were sitting there looking at each other and then it's been 10 seconds and somebody said: 'She just took a breath.' "
Ms Beck didn't realise how affected she was by Perky's close call until she went to her car afterwards to call a friend.
"I literally broke down, I was sobbing on the phone. I think the first words to come out of my mouth were: 'She's alive.' It was an emotional rollercoaster.
"She's stolen all our hearts, she's such a perky little thing."
Perky is now back at the sanctuary, doing well and spending much of her time on her personal heating pad, Ms Beck said.
Perky's amazing story has generated an huge amount of interest in what the sanctuary does.
"The response has just been unbelievable," Ms Beck said.
Numerous donations had been received as well as an almost overwhelming number of telephone calls from concerned citizens.
But the best thing, she said, was when one of the volunteers' sisters hit upon an idea.
"She said: 'Y'all need to make a T-shirt.' "
So Ms Beck and her team are now selling T-shirts with all funds going to Perky's recuperation and the sanctuary.
The T-shirt says "I helped the lucky duck" and has a picture of Perky on it.
Alocal mall has a stall for the T-shirts and they are also being sold on a local man's website.
Ms Beck said about 80 shirts had already been sold.

Well I know that I have shot ducks and thought they were dead reached down in the boat and had the dang thing bite me. All after being retrieved handed to me (or David) and looked at by one of us. I also can say that I dont always breast out our ducks right when we get home. Yeah sometimes they get thrown in a fridge for a few hours first. My question is what nut job took the duck out of a fridge and then to a vet? It is a friggin GAME animal!
I am not heatless I understand, and do, wildlife rescue. I just dont understand why this duck was taken out of a fridge and to the vet. I have been hearing this story for the past several days and it really looks bad on hunters the way they are telling it.0 -

Exactly! I have heard two versions of the story, One where the duck was in the fridge for 24 hours and another that it was in a freezer.
I agree bad press, or someone is just stupid!
That bird should have been gutted and cleaned ASAP, not a day later.0 -

since I dont know the entire story I will give an example...
my neighbor, being in his early 90's, I wont even start on all his heath issues, well he thinks its ok to climb up a ladder to fix somthing on the top of his rv. David and I had just got back from duck hunting and we saw WM fall off his ladder. David ran across the street (he is an EMT) and I out the ducks in the fridge. cracked hip and over 24 hrs later we remembered the ducks in the fridge.
It happens sometimes.
So now what about the ducks that are not dead when you get to the dock? I have lost more of those "humane neck breaker" things than I care to think of. I can also say that I have broken a ducks neck on the side of the boat many times after getting back to the docks.
My question is about the rights of the hunter? Why was this animal taken from his/her fridge in the first place?0 -
There are things in life that should be so obvious that we overlook them, it's clear that this duck was not meant to die at this time.
I would just eat it's legs and wings.0 -

I read an earlier version of the story. It said the hunter's wife discovered it in the fridge. The hubby was gone, so the wife did what most suburban housewives would do upon discovering an injured animal....she took it to the vet.0 -

I just googled and came up with a story like you said.. I am wondering what he thinks about all this and if he is filing for divorce for making him out to be an idiot to the entire world.
