What better day to shoot your first gun ...

... than Memorial Day!

I didn't tell Abby about this until today and she was really excited to be going shooting with Dad [:D]

Of course we have a lot of work to do yet ... she didn't actually hit a target today, she wanted to shoot at some of my prarie dogs printed on standard printer paper. I think next time out I'll buy some standard targets.

Thanks for having the give away MN Hunter, Abby and I are going to enjoy this for years!

    I was hoping that was a pose cause if the muzzle slipped back an inch she would be shooting through wood.

    Cool post though. How old is she? 7 or 8?

    Well I am not sure how old she is but I bought my GF's 5yr old a Chipmunk for his 5th birthday last year.


    The 2 best targets I have found that help keep him excited and on track (has the attention span of a 5yr old [:D]) are the Shoot N See and balloons. Kids like anything reactive since it proves they are doing something. Balloons are cheep and easy to set up. I usually staple 5-4 to a 2x4 then set it up at about 35 feet. There is no guessing if they are hit or not. I am not so concened with how accurate he is at this point as long as he is safe.

    What a great day for both of you. Enjoy everyday with her, seems like yesterday I was taking my boys to the range for the first time.

    Now they come along and outshoot me with my guns....[:)]

    Those photos will be some of your most prized
    photos one day - if they aren't already.

    My dad took some of me, shooting my first -
    a Rem. 511 - in a gravel pit in Lake Orion, MI,
    October 31, 1954. It was snowing fairly hard
    and I had to take my gloves off between clips
    (magazines, now). I've photo documented all
    of my kid's first time on the line.

    Great idea to take these pix. Not only will you have enjoyment in the future- so will the child.
    My grown sons, 35 & 37, shoot expert now. The first day we went to the range is engraved in my mind forever but their memory is a little hazy.
    IMHO teaching your children to shoot safely is the most rewarding thing a parent can do. Also insulates them from the whacko liberals later in life.

    That boy has never been able to keep clothes on! And half the time when he does have britches on they are unbuttoned![:D]

    Great thread! A target that my boys like to shoot is water bottles filled back up with a little soap added to them. At close range they blow up nicely. Water balloons work well, too!

    Get them started early!
