1911 frame no serial number?
Is a 1911 frame with out a serial number legal. I saw one and was wondering before I bought. Thanks

only illegal if it has been removed, if there are not any obvious grind marks and such you're good to go. 0 -
was told guns prior to 1968 guns were not required to have numbers, i.e.: bought a 22 it was made 1960 and has no numbers on it ,

SNs not required by law until 1968 GCA. But to remove or deface one IS illegal. Some "90%" frames may not have them- it is not yet a receiver until completed. Be careful if it is from a standard maker, such as Colt, Ithaca, A-O, etc. 0 -
Been doing a lot of studying/reading/research work on ATF regulations and Gun laws. Would like to know all that I can before I apply for an FFL next Spring.

ATF Regulations
? 178.34 Removed, obliterated, or altered serial number.
No person shall knowingly transport, ship, or receive in interstate
or foreign commerce any firearm which has had the importer's or
manufacturer's serial number removed, obliterated, or altered, or possess or receive any firearm which has had the importer's or manufacturer's serial number removed, obliterated, or altered and has, at any time, been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce.

Federal Gun laws
The Gun Control Act of 1968, Pub. L. No. 90-618, 82 Stat. 1213 (also known as GCA or GCA68, and codified as Chapter 44 of Title 18, United States Code)
The law also required that all newly-manufactured firearms produced by licensed manufacturers in the United States and imported into the United States bear a serial number. Firearms manufactured prior to the Gun Control Act remain exempt from the serial number requirement. Defacement or removal of the serial number (if present) is a felony offense.

So to answer your question. Yes it is legal.
But my personal feeling on the subject. If it can be proven that the weapon was produced before 1968. I would have no problem buying it.
If not. I would look else where for a 1911.0 -
Just curious, but how would one know when it was manufactured, if it didn't have a serial number ??

I was wondering the same thing, unless it's a firearm only built after 68 I don't see how any big brother would know the date of manufacture of something without any markings.0 -

Very good and accurate advice here.
If you are sure there never was a serial number, then stamp or engrave your own, and you can make it something cool while you are at it. Something like "PARA3505."
To reiterate someone else's advice though: If it has a manufacturer's name on it, it probably did have a serial number at one time.0 -
I recall semi-finish blanks sold with no serial numbers for 1911's a while back. I think they were cast/forged and wasn't tooled after that (no rail cuts or even stock screw holes). It might've been an over run for say (as an example) Wilson or others who used to have frames made for them by another company like Caspian.
Unless it was super cool or great price (so the extra cost of getting it transferable) I wouldn't look any further. Then again something about an untraceable gun does sound cool.0
