Diamond Ring Real or Fake ?

My wife thinks that we got shafted when we took her ring in to get sized and they switched the diamond to a fake one ..I paid $1700 for it so now Im wondering .We are dealing with a reputable franchise in Kay Jewelers .. How do I find out if its real or not ?

    Take it to a pawn shop or any other jeweller...they usually have a diamond tester....and other jewellers (good ones) can tell..

    If you paid $1,700 for it, don't you have a serial #, or some kind of marking that you can match to your documentation? I wouldn't buy one that expensive without it.

    The certificate will match the Cut/Clarity/Carat

    The ring has three diamonds on it.We took my daughter to the glow bowl thing and the center diamond glowed and the other two didnt . Now she thinks we got fake diamonds ..

    A month or two ago I posted about this very practice of swapping diamonds. Some jewelers are just not honest. If you got a map of your diamond it will be easy for a trained person to identify. You might be able to yourself with a 10x loupe. Best, Tom

    You might want to take it back to the jewelry store that you purcahsed it from and ask them if it is of the quality they carry. Explain to them your concern. Some stores carry a particular grade or grades of diamonds, and you might be able to find out if it matches up to their buying standards. Obviously, if it is of a lesser quality than they carry, and they will vouch to that effect, then you might have a legal case.

    Well the diamonds are real . We had them checked tonight at a large jeweler here in our area,. Whew.. Thanks for all the hlp guys ..

    A switch could be made taking out a higher quallity diamond and replaceing it with a lower quality diamond.

    exactly this happened to my grandmother, went to a new jewler to have it cleaned and tightened when she noticed it was loose as her regular shop was closed for vacation.
    when she went to her regular because it "just doesnt look like my ring" found out her blue/white had been switched with a next to worthless yellow stone

    We were told that some diamonds have a flourescent glow to them and some dont . That is why one glowed and the others didnt.

    My better half works in collections and had gotten a liberal education when selling high end jewelery forfeited as collateral. It turns out these days, diamonds under one caret are so common that they have essentially no value. diamond rings with small diamonds are valued at the the value of the gold.

    I heard a story a few years back that was interesting, yet VERY disturbing.
    In a small midwestern town there was a local independent jeweler. Most residents bought everything from this long time local. Parents anniversary rings and such then the children bought their engagement rings and the list goes on. The store owners son comes in and takes over as the old guy retires and leaves town. People would bring their jewelery in for cleaning and repair and the "new" jeweler was telling the customers these diamonds are fake where did you buy this ring? who worked on this ring? The customers responded, right here. from your father. We've been coming here and only here for 40+ years!!!!
    Seems the father didn't plan so well for retirement and decided to whack all the locals he could to "boost" his savings. I don't know what ever happened, or if the story is even true. But, it sure makes you wonder..............

    True but a low quality diamond will scratch glass as easily as a high quility one.

    Like snowflakes no two diamonds are exactly alike in cut. That alone is enough to make one glow and the others not.

    My wife has every diamond appraised and has certificates for every one. Not all by the same company/person. If someone trys a switcharoo on her they will likely get caught.

    I have NEVER understood the diamond thing. The mark up is INSANE with jewelry. My mother owns a jewelry store. What cost us less than $500 for the stone and setting, I see similar in stores for over $2k. Now, I was happy as a kid and teenage girl to be able to have any of it I wanted, but I would NEVER,personally, spend $1700 on a ring.
