We now have an emergency paging system. Students can sign-up with Campus police to receive a text message on our cell phones if there are any emergencies.....

That'll do me a hell of a lot of good if a lunatic comes into my building with a gun.....[xx(]

don't they have to be aware first to text it to you?, i suppose gunfire would do it

That is outstanding. Had the students at VT been afforded that courtesy, then it is doubtful that there would have been anyone killed in the classrooms.

That would be great...I know of very very few college students that don't have a cell phone on them all the time nowadays and 99% of them have em in class because I can always hear the damn buzzing when they go off...That would probably be the next best thing to a campus wide PA system I would think.

They just installed a siren in my school some months ago. It was made to warn everyone that is outside on campus of a disaster like a tornado or fire, but the chancellor just gave a speech and said it would be used in case of shootings as well. Installed on the highest building on campus, the library, it would be heard by all that are outside and some that are inside. In the case of a shooting though, by the time it sounds it would already be too late. I would rather be allowed to carry my gun on campus instead. Speaking of, I was talking about the situation with a liberal friend of mine today and she thinks that students should be allowed to carry weapons on campus too. Her boyfriend has a gun, and she wants to learn how to use it now, so naturally I would be glad to assist.

Why on gods green earth don't they use the old fashion method a very loud air raid siren? Inform everyone when you hear it, it could mean your life. And DRILL on it with a plan.

    Simple fool proof solution-

Would it be better if firearms were allowed on campus so if some nut case went loony, a person could defend themselves and their fellow classmates? [:D]

Oh, but that would be to logical I suppose. [:(][;)]

Yeah and also you could provide a self defense class for the students

tsavo: Do you go to Ga. State?
I am a former Panther. I went there from 1969 to 1973. I was on the soccer team.

My Son and Daughter both go to colleges here in PA, neither has a cell phone on while in class (I believe both a sign of respect for the teacher and a college ban).

The right to have a cell phone is not protected by the Constitution.

The right to protect yourself is given to us by the Constitution.

    Heh.

When I teach (Linux Admin class here at the comm. college I work at), my rule is that *I* get to answer any student's phone that rings while class is in session....

Lives should be saved by banning all firearms.

You are exactly right! They would have been killed while leaving the classrooms in hurried mobs.[xx(]
