Shoot, you know a deal will be made between DEI, Hendrick and NASCAR for Jr. to keep the No. 8. NASCAR isn't about to do anything that upsets their biggest star. This story is probably being spoon-fed just to stir up interest.

    Why don't they just buy 2 - 4's?

For those with dial-up I'll save you opening a TV page.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Hendrick Motorsports will not be able to purchase the No. 8 from Dale Earnhardt Inc., nor will any other team for that matter.

NASCAR on Monday reiterated its long-standing policy that the sanctioning body owns and assigns car numbers, and spokesman Ramsey Poston said a team cannot sell its car number.

"NASCAR owns the numbers and licenses them to teams on an annual basis," Poston said. "A team may allow another team to use the number for that year pending NASCAR's approval."

And the numbers are not for sale, he said.

Poston said each year a team submits numbers it wishes to use. If a team has been using that number, it is generally re-issued. If a team chooses to relinquish the number, the number returns to NASCAR and it will assign it to a team requesting it.

Asked if a team could make a financial arrangement to encourage another team to give up the use of a number, Poston said NASCAR would discourage such deals.

Since June 13, when Nextel Cup Series star Dale Earnhardt Jr. announced he would leave DEI for Hendrick Motorsports next season, there has been speculation Hendrick would attempt to procure the No. 8 he currently uses.

Earnhardt Jr. said during the news conference that he hoped he could drive the No. 8 in 2008.

"It would be great to keep the 8. I'm sure my fans would appreciate that," he told The Associated Press last week. "You kind of have to keep the mind-set that you might have to change numbers, so you start looking at other numbers."

An ESPN.com story Sunday quoted team owner Rick Hendrick as saying he would like to get the No. 8 for Earnhardt Jr. "I'm not sure what their position is or what they want for it," Hendrick said of DEI in the interview.

DEI spokesman John Story said Monday they were aware of the policy that NASCAR owns the car numbers and they cannot be sold.

Asked about other possible financial arrangements that could be made so Hendrick could obtain the No. 8, Story said, "It's way too early. There has been no significant dialogue in regard to the No. 8 other than fielding a couple of calls from people close to Hendrick Motorsports."

Officials at Hendrick Motorsports were not immediately available for comment.

I see NASCAR giving it to Jr next year. It's up to them after all and the are in the buisness of keeping the fans happy.

well you cant buy it if it aint for sale, if moma wants it she's going to get it. sounds like its up to her if she wants it, if for no other reason just to spite Jr. then there isn't anything HENDRICK can do.

The key is in the wording of the rule or past practice. NASCAR knows the evil step mom was being a turd and lost Jr.. Nothing says NASCAR has to reissue the 8 to DEI. Hendrick Motor Sports can ask for it and for the good of the sport and NASCAR they can issue it to Hendrick.

The best thing for Jr and nascar would be to change Jr's number. Just think about it, all of Jr's fans would put away their #8 memorabilia as it would become collectable and then they would go out and buy all new stuff. It would be the same ploy that Kobe Bryant used when he changed his number. It's all about the dollers and cents.

Jr. needs to run and win and stop worrying what number is painted on the door.

If he don't start winning and stop whining neither number will be worth a crap!!!
But I think you probably hit the nail on the head on this call!!!

Do what they do on the dirt track, just put a letter after the "8", like "8 E," or "8 Jr." or something to that effect.
    There, everyone is happy.

And exactly as mk19 said. Hendrick is likely more motivated by the opportunity to rake in the dough on merchandising, than DEI not wanting to sell the mumber.

Here we go again! Mom was doing what was BEST for DEI! Why should Jr. get 51% when Sr. had several other kids!!! Shouldn't they get a piece of the action too?? Seems to me that they should! Truex, Busch, and Menard will make a pretty good team next year. Remember...you heard it here first!

As Dheff said...Jr. needs to get off the schnide and actually WIN a race SOON! If he doesn't win next year, he will go down as just another fair driver who couldn't cut the mustard when it really counted.
