Diesel Jeep Liberty 4wd any good
Seeing a couple of these in Truck Trader. Are they any good or are they crappy chrysler products?

Man, those little 4 cyl diesels are called a 4B. they are made by cummins, and are exactly the same engine in the 2500 and 3500 minus 2 cylinders!
Go testdrive one yourself and see... dont go with the salesman, and find that little traction controll button on the steering column.
That little diesel will put the ass end sideways for half a block!
If it wasnt such a chick car, id have one!!!
PLUS its a CUMMINS! ( they dont advertise it as one though)

First... D/C products are anything but junk. The problem (if you can call it that) is that they're a bit different from GM offerings. I have the same problem as GM people in reverse. I don't like GM mostly because they're different from my Chrysler products.
The Liberty...
NOT A CUMMINS! It's, in fact, an Italian diesel engine. Very good from what I can understand. VERY GOOD! Power is different from a gasser because of the tremendous torque. Acceleration will feel slower... Until you look at the speedometer.
Economy will go from about mid 20's to over 30 under ideal conditions. By that I mean summer fuel, fair weather, and no headwinds. Liberty is a heavily built vehicle by any standards and economy suffers somewhat for this.
We have friends who own a diesel Liberty. They love the vehicle. As with everything else, don't purchase a vehicle that you don't like. If you can't open your mind to the differences between GM, Ford, or D/C, then you'll never be quite happy. If you can shrug off these differences, then you'll be very pleased.0 -

So do you work for Cummins, cause I DO! NOT DODGE, but Cummins Rocky Mountain Inc.
Hate to tell you this, but its a 4B, shrouded up to NOT look like a 4B. As a matter of fact, the mechanics just had a short dealer class in the liberty engine
Also, any other diesels in their line up are NOT Italian, they are a Mercedes diesel, and yes, are very good. As a matter of fact, Cummins and Dodge are parting ways in a couple years, and the 2500/3500 will start having the Mercedes diesel.
Oh yeah... it may be MADE in Itally, but its still a cummins!!!0 -
ahhh.. I have found that the first couple of years the liberty had the diesel, it WAS a 4b, and NOW it is a mercedes diesel in it, same as the grand cheroke.... 0 -
Crappy???? My old DOdGe was running strong for 18 yrs. Took a drunken Illegal T-boning to take her out... Ask me if he was insured!!! 0 -
Have a friend whose wife has one. She likes it. Nothing like the "old" diesel motors. Does sound a bit "odd" when it starts. Runs great, gets good mileage. And it's a JEEP. What more could you ask for? [:D] 0 -
Liberty a jeep ha ha lets take it off road and see how it stacks up against straight front axle jeeps ie xj,cj,yj,tj they only made the diesel 1 or 2 yrs right i hear its a torque monster tho i dont think the fuel mileage was real great 20 maybe 0 -
I spoke with a gentleman who test drove one with an auto transmission, and one with a manual. He said that the auto transmission wasn't tuned to the engine very well, and it was pretty doggy. He was also told that the milage wouldn't be all that great. He felt like the manual transmission model was an adequate commuter vehicle, but it didn't flatten your eyeballs off the line. 0 -
1. Liberty is not offered in 2007 as a diesel.
2. Liberty diesels are Italian (and used by Mercedes).
3. Dodge will continue with Cummins and WILL NOT change to MB diesels.
4. I own two BT's and I know exactly what they are. Sorry, but you
won't find one in a Liberty!
5. Jeep G/C diesel is a MB offering so I'm told. Don't know for sure.
6. Liberty diesel was offered in automatic only.
7. Just for giggles, I also own three 6BT's at the moment and I know what they are, too!0 -
Knew of one person having one and they like it. They get great mileage plus they say it is quiet. If they are getting 25mpg's, that is better than what I got with their 4.0 engine. I would think that the diesel could pull some weight as well.

Not only is the Italian VM Motori CRD diesel in the Liberty NOT a Cummins, it is in fact a subsidiary of Detroit Diesel, which is owned by Daimler Chrysler AG!
VM Motori makes all the diesels that Jeep puts in its Eurpean vehicles. It is absolutely Italian, and has nothing to do with Cummins. I think it is kind of ironic that Daimler/Chrysler owns Detroit Diesel but uses Cummins in the Rams. Especially with all the Mercedes diesel heritage! I guess you don't mess with a proven seller.
Though I am a very big fan of Cummins diesels, the Liberty CRD has never been made by them. In fact the CRD in the Liberty will not be offered in 2007 due to tightening emissions restrictions.0 -

Add to the list of what you DON'T know. The Dodge/Cummins contract extends well into the future. Dodge is presently planning on introducing a V-configuration Cummins into their 1/2 tons... Much like the GM and Ford offerings of today. You are aware that the 5.9 has now been supplanted by the 6.7 in Dodge trucks, aren't you?
Sprint and its Chrysler clone use the Mercedes engine. From what I gather a nice combination, but not the powerhouse of a Cummins straight six. Perhaps you were thinking along this line?
In any case, the 4BT would sink a Liberty. That "little" Cummins four is an industrial engine and is found nowhere near light SUV's. It is, however, a nice little engine for a Case 580 and similar vehicle types.
Just for the record... Dodge will not be discontinuing their relationship with Cummins. Dodge is presently pursuing greater ties with Cummins. Cummins is NOT owned by Ford as some have come to believe. Mercedes apparently will not introduce their engines into Dodge trucks, though I fail to understand exactly why. Oh... And Liberty diesels ARE NOT 4BT's.0 -
Only "kinda" germaine to the topic at hand, but it is getting hard to find a Detroit diesel anymore since MB bought them out. Switching them all over to the MB brand. Looks like Detroit will finally bite the dust. But then again, I remember in the mid-80's when Detroit (General Motors) and John Deere announced they were merging and came out with a new engine branded the DeDec. Had a really large, nice display at the ConExpo show in Vegas. Got a nice cap from them. Shortly thereafter the merger fell through and it was the last ever heard of the DeDec engine. 0
