NEF Handi Rifle barrel swap
Do you have to have the barrels fitted if you swap barrels,,I am not talking about what they say,,I'm talking real world,,,everything I have read said they will just swap out,,I know NEF wants you to send it in,,,,here is why I ask,,I have found one ,,its like new ,,stainless with the green laminated stocks,,beautiful little gun,,asking $170...problem,,it has a 204 Ruger barrel on it,,I have no need for a 204,,Thought about buying the rifle,selling the barrel and buying a couple more in caliburs I use but I dont want to have to send it in everytime I want a new barrel,,,I see them being sold over on Ebarf all the time...

Each barrel has to be fitted to match the receiver is goin on. That is why you have to send in the receiver when you want a different barrel.
Haven't looked at any on ebay, but my personnal opinion is it wouldn't be safe to just buy an NEF barrel from someone and put it on your receiver.
Also it might void any warrenty the receiver might have if a barrel is not fitted by the factory.0 -
if you find out that all you have to do is swap barrels please post,
i have an NEF in 280. NEF says you have to send, i think if i lived close enough to someone that has one we could find out. i can see where the big barrels changing with reg. barrels could be a prob.
might have to change forearms also.0 -
Here's my real world take on the issue. Try it, if it fits, knock yourself out. If not, sell it as it may fit someone elses frame. I have an NEF Survivor chambered in .223 that I purchased some years ago. Since then I have aquired 3 barrels via classifieds and auctions and get this, all three fit and function PERFECTLY. I now have the flexibility of using 223, 270, 308 & 44mag barrels on my rifle. Very cool. 0 -
As long as you have it checked by a COMPETENT gunsmith, there shouldn't be any problems. I love Handi-Rifles, and have several, and am a participant in several NEF discussion boards. The consensus there is that they at least need to be checked. But why not send it in? It doesn't cost much. You can order a new barrel and have it back in your hands from NEF, PROPERLY FITTED, for a little over $100. They will also do some trigger work if you ask. I think my son's 7mm-08 barrel cost $112 including shipping my receiver to them. Not bad.
One more thing...before you go swapping out on your own, make sure you know for sure what kind of receiver you have. Shotgun only receivers cannot handle the pressure from a centerfire caliber. Yours should be marked SB2 if it is centerfire or SB1 if shotgun only.0 -

iloveguns have you ask about mounting scope on rec. so it doesn't
interfer with barrel change
NEF should look into this, i think they could way more guns and barrels.0 -

That would be kinda hard to do! I have 4 barrels for the one receiver my son owns. All 4 barrels are scoped. When I change barrels, the point of aim moves thismuch. Usually a couple of shots gets it back on just fine.
One thing about some of the NEF barrels though...they used to sell some "ultralight" barrels. In some calibers (243 in particular), they just would not string together 3 good shots, no matter what you did to the gun.

I understand that you cannot use a rifle barrel on a sb-1 frame due to the high pressure, but would it be safe to use a sb-1 for low pressure round such as .22 hornet or .44 Special? I am about to send my sb-1 to NEF to have a black powder barrel put on but I would love to load up some .44's w/ trailboss and give her a try. 0 -

NEF won't put a rifle barrel of any kind on an SB1 frame. I guess you could try it if you came up the a 44 mag barrel from somewhere, but, personally, I wouldn't.0
