Refurbished Laptops?
Anyone ever bought one? I need one around 4-500.00 for the kids to play and watch movies on the road anyone have any recommend? It needs to be able to get online too.

When my compaq laptop crapped a couple of months ago, the local computer shop had a couple of refurb Dells for sale at $450 each. About a year old, nice small machines, but plenty powerful. And I do mean small! Very transportable. Really easy to pack around, compared to my old Compaq. Came with an external cdr/dvd drive. I will look at see what the model is, but I like it. Had a 6 month warranty on it. Built-in wireless, etc. Also bought the Compaq as s refurb through Compaq. Had it nearly 4 years with NO problems until it died. 0 -

Some are scratch & dent, customer returns, etc.; but, all are supposed to be checked out by Dell and carry the same "new" warranty. I've bought refurbished Dell's before and have not been disappointed. You can narrow your search by model number, price range, installed hardware, etc.

I have a friend who builds them, you probably want a 1.4 ghz processor with a 40-60 hard drive, 512 ram, and a wireless card...

This is what it looks like - its got Windows xp professional (same as home, just homework typing programs like microsoft word) except where the floppy is on that one - is a DVD player thing, it can watch DVD's but cannot burn them, its a 1.0 ghz, 512 ram, 30 gig Hard drive, internal wireless (built in so you dont have to hook it up, so just get a router and so forth)
shipping in upper 48 states, with insurance shipping will run about $25, so total of like 350-375 prolly
personal checks, money orders, cashiers check, paypal.

You dont need 1gb for anything like he wants, mine has 512 and 5 people use it and save stuff on it, we have ALOT of pics and games and music and stuff, and its still got over half memory. he will NEVER use 1 gig0 -

he isnt near me, But I know him, He is in Minnesota, But i can get one for you too.. He has 2 with a 30 gig hard drive, and 1 with a 20 gig.

The battery's are wonderful. And they come with the AC plugin for the wall.0 -

He can build OR refurbish, haha!
These he bought off ebay in a bulk package, Fixed everything with new parts, and put DVD drives in them, Hence they have no floppy drive.
He is offline now, But i THINK they have a warranty. I will check.

the one im typing from is a 1.2 amd with 256 {its max}, and it does what i need it to for 90% of my task, if i need more i turn on my dual core liquid cooled gaming machine with 2gigs of pc 6400 {1056fsb}, 10,000 rpm hd, burns a movie in 6 min0 -

1 gig never hurts, but 99% of user do not need it, the most over looked part in a pc is the heart of the system that is the hard drive speed, most are lucky if they have a 7400rpm hd, with a 5400 it doesn't matter how much ram you have it will still be slow, and if your ram speed is not adequate the size is moot, if your cache is not compatible with the above the size of the ram is moot, 512 of pc 6400 will out preform 4 gigs of pc3200
the laptop i am typing from has only 256, funny when i go to my gaming pc i cannot type any faster, i'll put my bench marks on it up against anyone here in that price range, i guarantee they will be limping away0 -
just check out fleebay. i just bought a 1 ghz with dvd player for 45.00 i use it in the truck all the time for my kids to watch movies on. its a toshiba satellite pro series. there are more on there. the guys at work have me looking for one to use at work during break time to surf the net.. 0 -
the biggest problem with buying a used laptop is wear on the mechanical parts. the electronics usually arne't bad, unless that's why they're getting rid of it.
common problem areas are:
- hinges
- keys on the keyboard
- lid latch
- touchpad buttons
the LCD screen is the most important, most expensive, and easiest broken thing on a laptop. problems can include vertical stripes on the display (bad connection), cracks, bad pixels (rare but quite annoying), or misaligned hinges caused the LCD to rub on the keyboard and now it's got wear marks on it. a replacement LCD is usually more than the laptop cost in the first place.0 -
yep, hard drive speed does make a big difference. laptop hdd's are usually slower rpm's to reduce heat and increase robustness (it gets bumped around). BUT newer ones have a larger buffer size to compensate, so look for that. 0 -

Oh geez! Even as a 14-year old, if you can't take the heat stay out of the dang kitchen! Boy, I bought my first computer WAY the heck before you were even born (1983 - Commodore). My second computer...I built it WAY before you were even born (1985 from a Heath parts kit).0
