A in California minor cannot be held to a legal contract to purchase a car or make the payments (they can default at will) but someone under the age of 18 can purchase or be the registered owner of a car.

Giving someone a vehicle does not make the giver liable for any costs, damages or liabilites resulting from actions the giftee nor is the giver mandated to provide insurance.

If this girl lives in your home you had damned well better see to it that she is insured because YOU will be the one they'll be coming after in the event of damages.

In most instances minors are only insured while driving specific cars in their own family (no rentals or driving friend's cars) and may well be excluded from driving some of the family vehicles. My youngest girl was not allowed to drive my Mercedes S-500 until after she turned 18 due to a clause in my insurance...which I had no problem with!

Insurance for minors is very costly and while boys cost a bundle, minor girls are not cheap by a long shot!

I have a sixteen year old stepdaughter about to drive. She lives with us......

    So, my questions are:
If he supplies a vehicle, won't insurance be his responsibility? NO
If she's driving his vehicle, will I have to insure her on mine also? NO Even if she's not driving those? NO
If the car's in her name (can a minor own a car?), will I still have to insure her on mine? YES - you are the responsible guardian.
I know it seems like I'm just trying to get out of paying for the car insurance. But that is what I'm trying to do.

    My answers in BLUE.

You are in a unique situation, because of the split household. WHO is responsible for her? Answer that and you answer ALL of your questions.

You can have YOUR insurance company provide you with a seperate "rider" on your insurance that you and her sign, indicating she is NOT INSURED TO DRIVE YOUR VEHICLE.

Problem with that...she may NOT drive any other vehicle, other than the one specified.

If he wants her to drive, let him supply the vehicle, license, AND insurance - in HIS name and HIS insurance company. Offer to pay for half - if they are not worth anything...should only be a couple hundred bucks a year.
