decommissioning a flag
What exactly is the proper way?
I take mine down, fold it, say a prayer, burn it, and bury the ashes. I was told by a retired Army Colonel that this was correct. However, my buddy, a former Marine, said this was not correct. He would not tell me what the correct way was.
Do the different branches have different flag etiquette?

Take it to your local American Legion or V.F.W. They will properly dispose of it for you but I think you are correct. 0 -

There are numerous ceremonies you can use to retire a flag, but what you are doing is fine. It is respectful, and disposes of a worn Old Glory in a very dignified manner. One thing my Boy Scouts do is save the grommets. They like to collect them for some reason. 0
