Two Dealer Questions...
I've never done consignments until now...It's my understanding that if I have a firearm on consignment for someone and it does not sell, I have to do a 4473 and NICS check before returning the firearm to the owner. Is this correct???
My second question...If someone dropped off a firearm for some minor gunsmithing/research work and the firearm is returned to the owner a couple days later, do I have to do the 4473/NICS check? I don't think it's required, but I am unsure.
In both instances, I know they have to be entered into my bound book...I'm just not sure about the 4473/background check...thanks!

On consignment yes you do have to do the 4473 or at least I always have to "I tend to consign quite a few guns at the local shops" as far as gunsmithing I was always told you don't have to and that's what they said at gunsmithing school but I would double check again once I started doing it. 0 -

No, I'm not a gunsmith and the gun was entered into my regular bound book. I have a customer that wants to sell a gun on consignment, but has not decided for sure to do that yet. He dropped a firearm off at my store yesterday to see if I could get him an idea of it's value. It's a pump action shotgun (Marlin Model 19-S) and the pump will not cycle...so I've been trying to figure it out. Being that this customer has not decided to place the gun on consignment yet, I was wondering if I could return it to him as a gunsmithing item...and not have to do the 4473/NICS check.?.? Thank for any input you can give me!!0 -

Question 1. Correct, NICS and 4473 required.
Question 2. If the firearm is returned to the owner before close of business the same day it was brought in, nothing is required. No bound book entry, no NICS, no 4473.
If the firearm stays overnight or longer at your place, it's like a marriage. Bound book, NICS, and 4473.0 -

First dealer question.....

Yes. Firearms received for sale on consignment must be entered in the dealer's "bound book."
Sales of the firearms are handled in the same manner as other firearm sales. Return of the remaining firearms by the licensee to the consignor is entered in the dealer's disposition record. An ATF Form 4473 and a NICS check must be completed.

No, provided the firearm is returned to the person from whom it was received.
Since your not a gunsmith, I'm not sure about #2.0 -

Every time I have had a gun at the smith, it went in the book, but when I got the gun back (sometimes a week or so later), there was no phone call made. My dealer has a seperate book for gunsmith work. As I understand, the gun has to be picked up by the person leaving it though. 0
