Satellite Internet - Anybody have it/Like it?
Where I live it is dial up only. And I hate having a home phone that cost $40 a month just to have.
I was thinking that if I dump the home phone & get Satellite internet, I could maybe get Better internet service while spending the same or even less than the cost of the phone + dial up service.
Has anybody done that or does it just not work that way?

I have it...it's better than dialup but not as good as DSL. Download speeds are great, but there is a delay in surfing...takes a while for pages to load...not as long as dial up, but much slower than DSL. It's quite a bit more expensive than DSL too. 0 -
One of my buddies has it and says the same thing as ECC almost word for word. 0 -
...Ditto from a friend that had it. (Hughes Net) Also got knocked offline about as often as dial-up. Install cost was pretty steep, also. 0 -
check with your cell provider. I have an internet card for my laptop (about $60 a month)...and have internet on my Treo.
Now you can get a Treo and download a $30 program that will let you use the internet off your phone on any wireless enabled pc you have.
I have both for business program reasons.
The internet on my Treo cell costs $30 a month, through Alltel and is almost as fast as my cable internet.
So if you have good cell service in your area it would probably be the cheapest way to go. I think most cell providers will "give" you a treo for about $300 with a 2 yr contract. If your contract is not renewable at the time it will cost you around $600 +/- for the Treo 700P.

I have satellite TV, and when it rains, snows, or is heavily overcast/foggy, my TV goes away. I suspect that also happens with satellite internet. I got DSL instead.
That being said, if you live outside the scope of DSL, you'd be fine with satellite, maybe using dial-up for a bad weather back-up.
It must really be nice to have enough money to do the handheld, wireless internet. Does it work everywhere, and in terrible weather?0 -
I have hughes net here as well. ECC is right and weather does effect it. I pay almost $60 a month to have it. Since this is my first set up I don't no of any other complaints. 0 -
I have it at home too. I dont have much to add. It is better then dial up, but not as nice as the DSL I have at my GF's house. 0
