M1A Bipod.....need help

I picked up a harris-style bipod for my M1A the other day. When I tried to put it on, I discovered its not the simple process I figured it would be. A quick check around the net showed that their are bipod adaptors for sale for M1As. Do I need to buy one?

  OK- I have a Springfield M1A1 & a Harris Bi-pod.
  
  I used the hole in the stock below the gas piston to mount the bi-pod.
  No problems with about 200rds on it.
  
  Your looking for the "female type nut-sert" type of mount from Harris.
  
  Its a Harris #2R adapter

  When I installed my bipod 8 years ago they didn't have the #2R. I used the #HB5 after relieving a space in the stock above the drain hole. It's been rock solid for thousands of rounds. Good to see Harris addressed this issue.

  Like the others have said find a way to mount a sling stud to the front an you will be good to go. I have a Versa-pod on mine. It replaces the gas plug with a long stud that your bipod slides onto. I have not had much of a chance to play with it yet so I can not give a good review. The rifle was a used gun that had it on there and it looks like a pretty good set up. I have seveal Harris Bipods for my other guns, but I think this may be the way to go on the M1A. One thing I REALLY like about the Versa-pod is that is comes off with the touch of a button and then just slides back on. I am thinking I am just buy one or two more sets of bipod legs then just buy adapters after that. I do like my Harris bipods but they are not as quick to switch between guns and at the price they cost a bit too much to have one for each.
