Looking at AR's

Just another dumb rookie seeking wisdom of the wise ones...... for a rookie wanting to buy his first AR and stay married, what's a good one? Not interested in shooting a mile away or a million rounds a month. I hear 223 ammo is out the roof, should I go with another caliber? Help the dummy out here guys, don't know where to start.

I just graduated to .45 cal after carrying a nice little 9 mm for 18 months or so and believe it or not, I shoot a tighter pattern with my new .45 than I do with my 9 mm, better balanced, nicer fit to my hand, easier to point and shoot. (it's a Springfield XD)

thanks again for the input, need some direction.

    All ammo is threw the roof. Unless you want a 22LR, stick with 223 and buy it in bulk.
    I love the AR. It's a gun that has alot of purposes, everything from home defense to long range target.
    I own a Bushmaster, Smith and Wesson Colt and builting a Double star. I've also shot DPMS, Armalites, Professional Ordance, and Rock river.
    There's really not much differance between them. Some have a little better finish and cleaner cast lines. Nothing I would worry about.
    Just get one that's price right in 223 and I think your'll be happy.
    But out of all the one's I've shot. I think the Smith is a little better. Everything is very tight on it and the cast lines are cleaned up very well.

    Cowboy: I was in your boots just a short time ago when I found this Forum. After many helpful threads from many informed members here, Some reserch on line, I did indeed settle on the Rock River Arms COYOTE. Leupold scoped and is it a shooter. I do not think you would go wrong ther.Gtiz

    If you know you are going to get one get some ammo this month. It will take another big jump on January 1, as most likely will your ar so just by both now. Look at Olympic Arms and Rock River Arms. Their basic models are reasonably priced and both have lifetime warrenty-something I like. Good luck! [:D]

    That right there what dagrizman bought is exactly what I would buy for myself.
    The Rock River Arms Coyote is one of the best configured AR for actually useing in the field.

    As CGR stated, pick the one with the logo you like the best on the lower receiver and you will be happy.
    I personally think RRA is a notch obove though.

    There are several brands out there that are very good. I have had first hand experience with Colt, DPMS, Rock River and Bushmaster. My buddy has a Stag Arms. Any of these will perform with whatever you have in mind.
    It depends on you price range.

    While .223 ammo has gone up quite a bit lately, it's still cheap compared to a lot of other calibers besides .22LR, I can buy 100 rounds for the same price as my buddy gets 40 for his .22-250. I would second the www.ar15.com, thats where I spent some time before I finally built mine, there is lots of useful info over there. From reading a lot, I got an idea of what to get and where to get it, I built my rifle for ~$700 including a Nikon scope and 5 new magazines so I figured that wasn't bad at all.

    Well basically you need to figure out what style you like. Then figure out what maker, most you can't go wrong with any of the main brands. I have Colts, Bushmasters, OA, EA Corp, DPMS, Some I bought and some I built and they are all good.

    I prefer Bushmaster by far then DPMS, Armalite, Rock River then S&W. I havent had as much range time with the S&W as the others but what Ive seen has all been positive. They say to stick to your ABCD and RR.

    I'd go with the S & W right now mainly because you can get one for around $950. That's what we sell them for and they come with a coupon to get a SIGMA for $99. The OLY ARMS Plinker we sell for $599.

    I'm in NY. I'm restricted to pre-ban (by DOM) if I want the features that were on the M16A1 that I carried in Vietnam. So I went all-out, and got a Colt SP1. Bought a military surplus unfired M16A1 upper from CDNN, and replaced the FCG to new. It's basically a new rifle. Joe

    I have and do own several Brands and configurations of the AR15 and the Coyote is my new favorite.
    My New RRA Coyote with Leupold scope.

    Well the top A1 is an early Colt SP1

    The other A1 is a later (with forward assist) made by SGW.

    Both are functional, but are basically wall hangers. I bought the SGW for a fair price to add to my collection. Then a few months later a member on another board made me a deal I could not refuse on the SP1 so I had to have it too. Some time I will add a M4 too so I have at least one of each example that were in main line use. That is part of the reason I have the A2 as well.

    I shoot my Varminiter a lot and I use my EA Corp (bottom) quite a bit. The 9mm hanging on the side is new and I have shot it a bit. I will shot it a lot soon as I have a suppressed upper being built for it right now.

    Cool...I bought one of the Colt M16A1 surplus uppers, put a AR bolt assy in it, and bought a stripped Fulton Armory lower...the gray of the F.A. lower isn't a "black" as a Bushmaster or DMPS lower, so it matches the upper nicely.

    Mine shoots grest..as close to owning a M16A1 as I'll ever get

    what's NOT a good one? would brand(s), if any, would you not want to own / or not recommend to others?

    NO VULCAN!! None of the plinkster Olys! RRA,Stag and DoubleStar are good entry level guns.stick with them.

    Well you can never have too much. I am feeling a little short after seeing the one about the old guy with 1 million rounds.

    You know ammo in a fight is like bubble gum in class........ bring enough for everyone.[:D]
