B-Day present.

Well I was at one of the local gun shops yesterday and found a neat little gun. It is one of the NEF handy rifles. I have seen them before and thought they were kinda neat, but this one followed me home. My GF has a son who is turning 6 next month and thought this would be good for him. I am not sure if he will be big enough to use it yet, but I am sure it wont take long for him to grow into it. I got him a .22 Chipmunk last year on his B-day. I think I did decent on the price it was $160. I know the scope isn't that great, but it is one less thing I will need to buy. It is .243 with the target/heavy 22" BBL. I am set up for reloading .243 so I can load light loads. As he grows we can add bbls to it which will be nice too.

    Damn straight.
    I started my boys out on Red Ryders, moved up to single shot Winchesters, bolt action .22 at 10, youth model Remington 1100 20 guage at 12, first dove shoot after the clays. The 35 year old is an Air Force OSI agent and collector, the 37 year old writes software for the Air Force and a collector. Every time they come home they lobby for my latest and greatest collectable to be on their list for inheritance.
    They have always been so excited about shooting they never considered drugs. [:D][:D][:D]

    Does it have the youth stock? If not, and you would like one, I have one around here somewhere. I think it is in the old house. If you want it, and if I can find it, you can have it free of charge. Love to see a kid get started right! My son started on one just like that. Still has the 243 barrell, and got him a 7mm/08 for last years dear season. Seems like it was $102 for the extra barrel with shipping included. Not bad! Killed 14 with the 243 over the years and 2 last year with the /08. Glad you got the heavy barrell, also, as the "regular" 243's are notorious for not holding zero after the first shot, and sometimes not even then! Let me know about the stock!

    Mabey but not anytime real soon. We have been together about 3yrs. We have both been married in the past so we are in no rush. That is one mistake I learned the first time [:D].

    This gun was a used one but now that I hear that I am gald I got the target bbl too. I am not sure what stock is on it, but it is not full sized which is part of the reason I picked it up. The total length of the stock is about 11" with about 1" being the recoil pad. I think this gun is going to be a bit big for him for a year or two. The offer of the other stock is very generous, if it is smaller I will take you up on the offer. If you find it just email me and let me know if I can at least pay for shipping or something.

    I'll try to the stock tomorrow and measure it. Yours looks like a full-size stock, but my eyes are gettin' old! What is the LOP on it? That will tell you for sure. Should be 11 3/4 with the youth stock and 14 1/4 with the adult. Just measure from the trigger to the rear of the stock.

    EDIT...my son was 6 when he got his. Had to get him a shooting stick to help him hold it up. Those things are barrel heavy BIG TIME.

    Well it is neither [;)]. It comes out at 12 1/2. I was thinking that it was a "cut down" someone did and now I am sure of it. I did measure a NEF shotgun I have with a full stock and it came out at 14 1/4. If you find your that would be great just let me know. I have about a month until his B-Day.
