I messed up at the range
I took the SKS to the range yesterday. The rear sight is adjustable and calibrated with markings ranging from 1 to 10 with a 3 at the far rear. I suspected that I had this wrong, but went with the assumption that the calibration was from 30 to 100 M. I backed up to 100 yards, set the sight on 10 and fired.......WAY over the top of the berm. Fortunately, behind the berm there is nothing but a large hill with a wheat field. At a different range, that might have been disastrous; possibly even criminally negligent. Of course the sights are calibrated from 100 to 1000 meters with the rearmost 3 being a second setting for 300 meters (though I'm not sure why this is necessary).

[:D][:D]...gotta love those ladder(?) sights. I hate 'em. If and when I grab an old rifle with an unfamiliar sight...especially those built by them "fureigners"...I dont jump on the 100 yard range to begin with!

Did you go check the wheat field for a dead John DEERE?...[8D]

Yep, it's a ladder sight, and the first I've owned. I had a good sight-line for a half mile into the wheat field. Maybe I killed a bunny; I didn't walk out to check.
I've had the rifle out before but kept it on the 1 (hundred meter) setting and shot golf balls quite satisfactorily at about 20 yards.
I did make a mental note to KNOW what the calibration settings mean before firing another new-to-me gun and also reminded myself that if I'm having the sense it ain't right, it's probably time to step back and think carefully about how to (or not to) proceed.0 -

The back "3" is the "battle sight" setting, IOW the "point blank" range most useful for combat.
The rest of the settings are scaled in 100 meter increments (100-1000).
Why would you ASSUME that any iron sighted rifle would have a minimum range setting of only 10 meters?0 -

If that is a accurate photo of the berm at that range, it's no wonder that folks are complaining. That thing is bairly big enough to qualify as a archery/pellet gun backstop.
Hell, I had a bigger birm than that on my 50yd back yard range.0 -
I have to agree with tailgunner, the berm shown in the photo is way too short. Needs to be at least twice as high, IMO. 0 -

I can relate in an odd sort of way. You brought back one of my memories. Many many years ago when I bought what I think was one of the first compound bows I had a similar moment. Had shot old recurves years before so was trying to remember the huge arc needed to hit far target. Drove out in the boonies and down into a gulley. Set my large target on the side of the hill then got back and let an arrow fly. Arrow went over the hill and I never seen it again.[:(][:)][:(][:)] 0 -

He probably is. Range rules state that if you can see farm equipment, the range is closed. I don't know how well the members respect that rule; I've never seen farm equipment when I've been there.0 -

Thanks. I got home and looked that info up after realizing my error.
As for the assumption question: I think I covered that in the sentence about stupidity in the original post.0
