First 1911
I'm not a stranger to semiautomatics...I have a few and fire them regularly. Now I want a Model 1911 and I'm getting conflicting info from a lot of different gun guys. One sales guy from a big box outdoor store highly recommended a Taurus and then "the 1911 guy" at my range said they were no good at all. Others are steering me toward the S&W and others, the Kimber. I do NOT feel the need to spend a ton of dough for any kind of custom job but I'm willing to go for around $800 +/- new or good shape used.
Your different opinions with sound reasoning is what I'm looking for as a decision making aid.

The "1911 guy" is right. Everybody has their favorite,my Springfeild is great,GRD backs RIA. RIA is probably the best for the money.I'm sure you will get much advise on this. 0 -
Go to Springfield Armory website. I think they make a good quality 1911 at a decent price. There in your price range. I like mine. 0 -

For $800 you could get a nice Colt series..........spend a little more and get a nice Kimber 0 -
I have a 1911 Colt "National Match" that has been accurized by the late George Madore, a renowned bullseye pistolsmith in PA. He stamped his logo on the slide, so the gun will hold under 2" at 50yds.
$800 plus shipping its yours with a return policy we can negotiate.
Oh yeah, it has an ultradot reddot sight on it too.
This is a tackdriver .45, used in bullseye (NRA Conventional Pistol Competition).0 -

This is one of Colts better lines, the XSE. This is one I'm looking for [4.25" bbl, stainless]. One came up in excellent condition at a gun shop [it was their rental] for $500. I snoozed, and lost.
The copy of DWS they are talking about is a sweet piece, rather rare. I think their standard officer's size uses a smaller frame.
Some copies are "lightweight", which is not something I'd be looking for.

Another idea is a 4.25" commander in .40S&W. That'd be a sweet shooter with great handling.0 -
Model 1911s are made by COLT, all others are mere copies. If you insist on a copy the S&W and the Springfield are the only two worth considering.

I love my Springfield TRP 1911, and my Springfield Loaded Model their really what I would say very good guns. There are others I would think Taurus, SIG, Kimber or any of the big name guns are reliable guns. 0 -

The field is wide open. Most have been mentioned but if you want a good weapon and aren't a slave to the name (other than Colt), a few others exist. The Argentine Systema's are as good as anything Hartford ever put out. Swedish steel was used to make the slides. The Norinco's pass muster too as a shooter. The Taurus is probably the finest all around example currently on the market.
A few I would stay away from are Charles Daly, old Auto Ordnance, and the new S&W. S&W just has to fix something that isn't broken and designed theirs with a different extractor unlike any in real 1911's. They do not interchange.0 -
There are guys who will own nothing but a parts gun.
You start with a frame [$225 or less] and go from there.
The proper barrel link might be the hardest part to figure out.0 -

Call me kooky but I generally prefer the original. Pictured below is my first 1911 purchased new in February of 1972 for $135. In 1975 I added the S&W rear sight and the ivory stocks. Don't know how many thousands of rounds have been fired with zero failures to fire, feed or eject. Zero.
I can do without all the extended levers and extra grooves and fancy geegaws and doodads. You can have your $2,000 Kimbers and Baers and whatever other Johnny Come Lately is now making 1911s. I prefer the original design as conceived by John Browning and executed by Colt.0 -

Both S & W and Kimber will get you into a new stainless model for under $ 800.00, and Made in the U.S.A. Springfield, RIA, etc. are made overseas. 0 -
