What kind of metal?

    Sounds like an artificial flint striker, like the Swedish FireSteel in the link below:

    It's a Magnesium alloy made of "7 different metals", which somehow must give it the ability to spark.Your guess is as good as mine as to what the "7 different metals" are.

    Thanks for the link Talking Head but I think this might still have been a little different in that he used shavings from the rod scarped onto paper or cotton balls to cause them to ignite like magnesium when the same bar was used to create those sparks.

    Moog, my fire starter is magnesium but has a steel rod on one side. After you scrape the mag, you just scrape the steel rod with your knife and sparks fly and it starts up. Tom

    The critical metal in those is unobtainium. Very hard to find in the natural state.

    I made something similar at one time, but it had a flint rod imbedded
    in one side of the magnesium rod...used a piece of broken hacksaw
    blade for the stiker.
