Importing gun parts from europe?!
Hi,
Are there any restrictions importing gun parts (Stocks, trigger groups, etc.) from europe?
I've heard you need an authorization if you want to import such parts to the US. Is that right?

I'm not the one you want to trust for good information but....
If it's not ammuntion and
if it's not a receiver,
then I don't think it's regulated.
The good advice I got from others on this board was: Call the BATF and ask them.
You may look at several BATF forms (they're all available online--just use Google) and you may talk to several BATF agents before you figure out where the good information is but if you persevere, you probably will wind up with the truth, from the horse's mouth!
The only other word of caution is this: BATF agents really do want to help you. And they want to help you to the extent that they sometimes will give you bad answers, rather than admitting that they don't know the real answers. In one case I got three different answers from three different agents. In that case I chose the answer from the guy who was working in the office that ultimately will approve or deny my import permit.
Seriously, I went from no knowledge to a pretty good understanding of my import situation with less than 10 hours of research time. That research time included web searches, conversations with BATF agents, time reading the BATF forms and instructions, and conversations with FFL's.
The information is out there; you should get it from the people who have the power to prosecute you if you screw up. Don't look for it here.0 -
If the value is over $100 you need a import form 6 ... can't tell you where to get it as I've never needed one. Of course you can't legally import receivers for firearms even if the value is less than $100 without a special permit/license.
The only gun related parts I've ever had shipped from across the pond were sights, hand guards and a B-B gun. Other than that I've had some Wentworth tools shipped from the UK ...

Not really true.
You can, as an individual, import whole guns of remarkable value. Assuming you're not set up as a regular importer, you need an FFL to file the paperwork for you and that FFL may do so only "occasionally," (which apparently means not more than twice per year) provided that the imported items are for personal use by the FFL, or for personal use by an unlicensed individual--that's you--on whose behalf the FFL is acting, but (and this is the important part) the guns CANNOT BE IMPORTED IN THIS MANNER FOR RESALE.
The form if you're trying to import guns in this way (and it's different if you're military personnel) is the BATF form 6, part 1, which they have filed as form # 5330.3a. It's pretty easy to find on their website under the 'forms' (who woulda guessed!) header.
By the way, if you do happen to be in the US military and are trying to import fire-arms, I'm pretty sure it's a different variation of the form 6 you need to fill out, and I'm even more sure that that form falls under the '5000-series' of forms on the BATF website. In other words, it's just as easy to find as the civilian import form.
Dammit I better be right about all this, because I have four rifles hinging on it and at least one of them has the potential to be really cool.0 -

It may depend on the type of firearm (ie) the SiG-55x series of firearms, its the upper that is serial numbered ... the lower is just a "part".
I get th feeling that you are looking for guidance, but if you are looking for answers, you should look to the BTAFE ... they are the ones that will prosecute you if you don't follow their guidelines.
Any instructions you get from the BTAFE, try to get it in writing on their letterhead or be able to site the web address where you got the info ... it would probably be best to print this as well. You should cover your butt to the best of your ability ... I believe the legal term is "due diligence".

As long as it is not a reciever or ammo then the ATF dont need to get involved or if it is antique.I import antique Rolling Block regularly and legally with no problems what so ever. 0 -
Then how about this - I'd like to reimport a Ruger Redhawk that was part of a run made by Ruger specifically for a gun club in Great Britain, and not available for sale in the States. Can that be done?
They're identical to normal Redhawks except they have ridiculously long barrels - up to 21 inches - to qualify them for British import.0 -

It's not military surplus; not a problem there.
It includes a receiver; form six and FFL time.
US law forbids importation of anything with bbl less than four inches....I don't see why a 21-inch revolver bbl would be a problem.
Sounds do-able to me.0
