a good effort
Is it me, or is about freaking everybody in this world just mailing it in, doing the bare minimum, surly and unhelpful? How come I have to be polite, pleasant, helpful, interested, and accommodating when the rest of the world can treat the public like dirt? What's happened to service in this country?

There's still some good service out there.
But I will say this: when--way back in the day--I worked at a deli, if somebody asked for a certain amount of meat I would try to get to within 5% of their requested weight. If it was busy and I was only within 10%, I'd say: is that ok? Nobody told me that was store policy; that just seemed reasonable to me. Today if I walk into the store and ask for a certain quantity of meat it is routinely heavy by about 20%, and they almost never ask if that's ok.
Service standards are declining everywhere. I think we're trading quality for price. I'm not sure how much I'd care about the weight of the meat I was shoveling out to a customer anymore if I were making minimum wage today. Seventeen years ago I was making just a dollar an hour less ($6.50) than minimum wage is now (not quite $7.50 in WA state), when I was working in that deli. Ten miles to the east, in ID, minimum wage hasn't even cracked $6 per hour.
COULD you care, at that wage?0
