If you like serial killer movies....

It's good. I think some folks just can't stand Kevin Costner. I think he's a good actor who's make a few stinkers. Anyway, he leads, so if you hate him, disregard. But William Hurt is pure genius.

    Not a Kevin Costner fan but that was a gooder. William Hurt Excellent. I did want to kill that moron Photographer dude and the ending I fear they'll do a number 2. If not then they can make one with the daughter following pops' foot steps. Not enough chick serial killers.

    I loved it, BUT. . .

    Its a dark comedy/satire played absolutely straight, and not everyone is going to "get" it, for that reason.

    If you don't have a slightly "sick" sense of humor, you probably won't enjoy it.

    IMO, Hurt and Costner were well cast, and did good jobs in their respective roles here. Even Dane Cook wasn't half bad.

    Now you're making me feel like a philistine. I'm having a hard time getting dark comedy out of that, though maybe through the daughter's role? I guess Dane Cook must have been the photographer? Anyway, I think I agree that his performance is well-described as 'not half bad'.

    You're right that Dane Cook plays the photographer character. Its an odd choice given his background as a comedian in an otherwise "straight" role, but I suspect he was brought in to make the movie more palatable to women (he's a female favorite, for whatever reason).

    You don't have to view this as a satire, but given the utter proposterousness of the premise, that's how I read it.

    The black humor is that the protagonist is otherwise the perfect model citizen: man of the year, happily married, heck, he's even pro-life. What a nice guy, except for his little problem.

    Its a subtle mockery of our "self-help" PC society, and some of the dialogue between Brooks and his alter ego is kind of humorous.

    Here's two reviews mentioning the black humor angle (warning, "spoilers").
