I took my AR out for the first time and I picked up my shells because I plan on starting to reload. Later on when I got home I noticed that on each shell there was a dent and a semi deep scratch on the middle of each of the shells. What causes this? Are the shells ok to reload even with the semi deep scratch on the side?

  wether to reload them or not is your choice I would not.
  
  I think it is caused by the ejector on your AR

  Maybe you can tune your ejector (assuming that's the problem) on your AR so that it doesn't score the casings?
  
  I don't reload but have been thinking about starting. I know a guy who has substantial experience with all things rifle, including reloading. His comment was this: you only have to see an action blow up once before you know you never want to see it ever again.
  
  You might save a few bucks per thousand rounds by reloading. And you might run tens of thousands of damaged cartridges through your rifle without a mishap (after all, it doesn't sound like they're severely damaged). Even so, the cost of a mis-hap is potentially great enough that I'd dump the scored brass and try to fix whatever in the rifle is causing the problem. Maybe scored brass is ok. But I'd rather look at it like this: Would you take $50 for a one in 1 million chance that you'll die or be maimed or disfigured? I wouldn't.
