Walmart Gun Sales
I was very suprised that a new Super-Walmart in my parents hometown (northwest VA) was ending gun sales. Why? The area is starting to grow, but there are major rural areas in the surrounding area. Everything is marked down w/a red tag, but nothing is a "great" bargain. Are there alot of Wallyworld's shutting down the gun sales?

Here is a thread that talks about walmart getting out of the gun business. Last time I checked, they are still selling them here in St. Louis,Mo.

What they told me is if a particular walmart dose not sell at least 300 guns in a year, they will lose their guns. 0 -

i saw a police chase once in winchester,va where a van was being chased and it ran a red light and plowed a car in the intersection. i was pumping gas right there. after the wreck i met a local college girl and we made out at her house. true story. i love virginia 0 -
The walmart in my little town seems to sell quite a few guns. I have bought one there myself, and have been eyeballing a couple others.
Right now shot guns are running as turkey season is fast approching.0 -
It all depends on volume of sales. Each individual location has to sell X-number of firearms per year. If they don't, then the gun counter is closed.
The Wal-marts that still sell guns are those that sell beyond the X-number. There's a handful in Colorado, whereas the two Wal-marts in Baraboo, WI still sell them like they're going out of style.0 -

Which is no doubt why Wal-Mart is the nation's leading retailer - one of the largest in the world - and why it remains financially healthy. Can't say the same for K-Mart/Sears and a host of others no longer around. Sam Walton knew what he was doing and he obviously trained his successors well. IMO.0 -

We can get into a discussion, but it goes way beyond this. Wal-mart is successful because Wal-mart engages in smart marketing. They know who the target consumer is, they cater to the target consumer, they advertise to the target consumer and they make shopping at Wal-mart attractive to the target consumer by offering loss leaders that are significant to the target consumer. This encourages the target consumer to purchase more product because, in the end, she saves more money.

FWIW, I offered it only as a very broad commentary that Wal-Mart actually pays attention to its individual store's SKU's and unit sales, unlike other retailers who cookie-cuttered their locations after one or two successful ones and then shuttered them later on when things didn't pan out.[:)]0 -
Walmart stopped selling guns in all of California a couple of years ago because they got in trouble with the Cal DOJ and/or ATF. The Walmarts in my county (Alameda) do not even sell ammo anymore.

+1 PJ, I stopped in the WallyWorld in Tracy (around here we'd call it farm country) they have stopped carrying ammo! I spoke with the
dept. manager, they said sales are down 20-25% in that dept. since
they got the word to discontinue ALL ammo sales.
Some fishing gear left on the shelves, but it was weak!0 -
Seems like in Massachusetts that Walmart is going out of the gun business. I found on the other day that had some .22 ammo bricks of 550 for a good price. Perfect, I'll buy some. I get a sales person and they tell me they cannot sell ammo! Go figure ... why have it on the shelf and not sell it? 0 -

stopped by the local walmart in Johnstown Pa. the gun cases are filled with choke tubes and deer calls. I guess they didn't sell enough guns. 0 -

I had no idea that Walmarts in MA sold *any* guns or ammo. They *should* be able to do it, if you show them your LTC. (I'd talk to their manager, you might be able to clean out their inventory at a good price).
I used to stop at the Walmart in Manchester NH (ie that free state next to MA) before shooting at the "Firing Line" there.0
