Direct TV/Comcast/DishTV---negotiations
I've been a customer of Direct TV for more than 8 years and constantly see their special offers for "new customers only", as I'm sure Comcast, Dish TV and others also do. I had a friend tell me yesterday that I need to call Direct TV and tell them to disconnect my service because I had been offered a special package (free DVR, free movie channels, etc.) by a competitor (Comcast, etc.) and then Direct TV would offer me the these special deals to keep me as a customer.
Have you ever used this ploy to get "new customer specials" and were you successful?

Yes, I've used it with my Spring PCS service several times.
My monthly cell bill is $24.99, and I get: 600 minutes of prime time calling, unlimited off hours calling, free long distance, free PCS to PCS calling, free voice mail, and a $5 per month kickback for being a "long time customer" (been with Sprint since 1998). This package is roughly $40 per month now.
Just call and ask. Thats all I've done. If they say "no" just ask for the "retention department".
Good luck.

I've seen people do it with credit cards to get a better interest rate. 0 -
Yes, it works! I have used the same ploy with phone companies, credit card companies, cell phone carriers, satellite TV, cable TV, ect. You name it. They will jump through hoops to keep a customer. Only one time did I have to go to a "higher power". That was with Cingular Wireless. They wouldn't match an add for 2 new phones at x price. Said it was "for new customers only." Looked on the net, found the phone number for the corporate hdq's. Got through to the receptionis for the president of the company. (!) Said if I would fax her the ad, she would see about it. She called me back the next day and said, "Where do I need to send the 2 new phones. They will be on us." Can't beat that! GO FOR IT! 0 -
I also use it on my automobile insurance.
I "almost" never pay the amount they "first" bill me for.0 -
For me, it's a way of life.

That works with just about everyone, including the phone company, cell companies, etc. Pretty much anyone offering a special deal for new customers (when there's competition) will offer the deal to existing customers if they threaten to leave.0 -
Yes, I've tried with Dish. I wanted to upgrade my receivers and add one. I call the rep. and he tells me 'no', that I can buy the refurbished ones. I speak to his supervisor that also tells me 'no.' I switch to DirectTV, and call back Dish to tell them to cancel my service. They forward me to the Cancellation Department. The guy offers me the world to stay with Dish. I tell him sorry, that I've already switched. I explain what happened. He told me the supervisor had the authority to and should have granted my request. Oh, well. DirectTV got my business. 0
