Semi. You should be able to pick up an auto if you want one.

I like the three shot burst personally. I don't know how to make it fully auto. Would it be able to go from full to semi to safety? If so there's nothing to lose in converting it to full auto in my view.

From what I've read on the internet, (and no one ever lies there), it is real simple to modify an AK in a pinch to slam fire. On the other side, I can't imagine the accurancy of a 7.62X39 full auto be worth much more than the intimidation factor multiplied by the false sense of security factor. I guess the combination of those two factors can make full-auto very useful to some people.

Hypothetically, if it came to that point, would keeping it semi-auto really matter in a legal sense?

    Automatic weapons have their place.

If the SHTF, I would want to maintain ammo discipline due to supply issues.

A few well place shots can do the right amount of damage without spray and pray.

Semi-Auto large capacity mags....If it works well..DON'T mess with it...no time for failure during a altercation...once the battle has begun, give no quater...show no mercy. NEVER underestimate your adversary.

leave it as it was built and don't change it, parts stores if you screw up the trigger group or others parts will be unavaiable, if the house of cards collapses.

To quote Sam Elliot when asked if he was going to take an M-16 instead of his Colt 1911A1 in "We Were Soldiers"

"Time comes I need one, there will be plenty of 'em laying on the ground"

In reality, I've got a Ruger AC556, the best of all worlds. Semi, 3 round burst, full auto.

I'd go with semi only because it's what I practice with and know. If the SHTF, automatic fire wouldn't do much from me other than waste ammunition.

I'm not knocking full auto firearms, I'm just saying there are folks out there more experienced in their use than I.

Leave it alone - no machinging skills to make the cut on on the FAL upper reciever. Besides, a full auto FAL would be a bit much to control. Don't mean I wouldn't scavenge one given the opportunity if the SHTF or if I felt I needed one I could probably locate one locally...

In such a scenario a threaded barrel and silencer would lengthen your survival time.

Full auto fire would attract somebody looking for one....and there will be millions looking for one.

    Semi.

Agree with Doug. Quality over quantity. That's not to say I wouldn't souvenir me a full auto when I found one.

Hypothetically, if we're talking about Zombies, it's another story.

There are Book sellers at our gunshows that have countless books on the subject. For entertainment purposes only.

I personally think full auto or burst fire would be enjoyable but i really don't have a purpose for it beyond that. I stick with a semi in my current situation status. Battlefield i would rather have the options.

...In answer to the original question, sustained, aimed fire should keep the problems at a distance. That's not to say that a suppressed, pistol caliber subgun wouldn't be appropriate in certain situations.
